Dominican's Four-Game Winning Streak Ends at Whittier

WHITTIER, Calif. - Dominican University of California 's four-game winning streak came to an end on Friday with a 12-8 loss at Whittier College.

Dominican's Cody Bernstein netted the first goal of the game but the two teams battled to a 2-2 tie after the first quater and to a 5-5 tie at halftime.

It was Scott Preschert who set the tone for the Poets (5-2). The Whittier face-off man had a career night, winning 19 of his 22 face-offs, and kept the Penguins (7-2) on defense much of the night. Whittier pulled away in the third quarter, outscoring the Penguins 3-1 to claim an 8-6 lead. Four more goals extended that lead to 11-6 and while Dominican was able to net two goals late from Grant Clifford and Dylan Acevedo, time ran on the Penguins.

Clifford led Dominican with a pair of goals on five shots. Six others scored one goal apiece for the Penguins.

Redshirt freshman Reis Stanley took his first loss to fall to 3-1. Stanley made 15 saves in 56 minutes of action. Nathan Kleponis (5-2) made 11 saves for the Poets.

"There are times in sports when you play an opponent who has an outstanding day while you simply do not, and I think that was the case tonight," said Dominican Head Coach Ned Webster. "Their face-off man had a career performance. Hats off to the Whittier players and coaches. They earned the win."

Dominican will next head to Colorado for a two-game swing, facing Western Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association opponents Adams State and Colorado Mesa on April 11 and 13.
