Villanova Outlasts Rutgers in Teams' Big East Opener

VILLANOVA, Pa. - Behind three different hat tricks, Villanova (5-4, 1-0 Big East) picked up its first conference win of the season and first program win over Rutgers (6-5, 0-1 Big East) with a 14-11 score Saturday afternoon.

Sophomore midfielder Shannon Galvin, freshman midfielder Becca Hetrick and senior attack Ali Judge each recorded three goals as the Wildcats battled in the rain. This is the first time Villanova has started conference play 1-0.

The teams traded the lead to start the game with Rutgers scoring first 30 seconds into the game. Hetrick scored nearly 10 minutes later to tie the game. The Scarlet Knights briefly took the lead back before Hetrick tied the game again at 17:17.

The Wildcats took the lead for the first time with a goal at 16:22 before Rutgers tied it again a few minutes later.

Villanova began to pull away as they scored three consecutive goals. Sophomore midfielder Chelsey Henderson, Hetrick and junior forward Jessica Mucci each scored as the Wildcats took a 7-4 lead. Rutgers added one more goal as Wildcats took a 7-5 lead into the half.

Sophomore attack Meghan Breen scored to start the second before the Rutgers offense went on a three goal streak to tie the game at eight.

After a Villanova timeout, Breen and Galvin each scored to give the Wildcats a lead they would not relinquish for the rest of the game.

Mucci, Galvin and Judge padded the lead with three goals in three minutes in the middle of the half. The Scarlet Knights tallied their 10th goal at 5:16 and Galvin added Villanova's last goal one minute later.

Megan Clements scored her fourth goal of the game at 2:56 for Rutgers, but the Wildcats took the game, 14-11.

Sophomore Jaclyn Fraum made 15 saves in goal, 10 in the second half, in her best outing of the season. Fraum also recorded one ground ball.

Amanda Currell started in goal for the Scarlet Knights and made four saves in the first half before being pulled for Candice Dandridge. After Dandridge allowed five goals and making no saves, Currell came back 15 minutes into the second and finished the game with seven saves and nine goals allowed.

Rutgers led in shots, 34-26, and in draw controls, 15-12. Villanova held a slim 13-12 advantage in ground balls. The Wildcats completed 12 of 14 clears and held the Scarlet Knights to 0 of 5 in free-position shots.

The Wildcats play their last nonconference game of the year at Lafayette next Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. in Easton, Pa.

(March 29, 2014) Rutgers (6-5, 0-1 Big East) saw its three-game win streak come to an end, as the squad fell to Villanova (5-4, 1-0 Big East), 14-11, Saturday afternoon in the Big East Conference opener for both teams. Senior attacker Megan Clements (Pennington, N.J.) and sophomore attacker Kim Kolodny (Farmingdale, N.Y.) both recorded hat tricks in the loss, while four total Scarlet Knights tallied two or more goals.

Clements (4G) and Kolodny (3G, 1A) tied for the team-high in points.

Redshirt sophomore midfielder Kristin Kocher (Medford, N.J.) and sophomore attacker Halley Barnes (Garnet Valley, Pa.) added two goals each to also notch multi-goal games for RU. Barnes added an assist to finish with three points on the day.

Villanova had three players finish with three or more goals. Shannon Galvin notched a team-high four points (3G, 1A).

Rutgers out-shot the hosts by a 34-26 margin and also had the advantage in draw controls (15-12). Villanova secured 13 groundballs to RU's 12.
