Belmont Abbey Grounds Flying Fleet in Second Half

Belmont Abbey held Erskine scoreless in the second half as the Crusaders overcame a 4-2 halftime deficit as they scored the last six goals of the game and earn a 7-4 Conference Carolinas victory this afternoon at Alumni Field. Belmont Abbey improves to 7-3 overall and 3-1 in Conference Carolinas, while Erskine drops to 6-5 overall and 0-3 in league play.

Erskine had three second half goals disallowed after all three goals were scored with illegal sticks.

The Flying Fleet built a 4-2 halftime lead, but its last marker of the game came with 7:26 left in the first half to open up a 4-1 edge.

Kassie Easter made it 4-2 with 3:34 left, which began a six goal string for the Crusaders.

After being outshot 10-7 in the first half, the Crusaders offense came alive in the final 30 minutes, outshooting Erskine 16-4 in the second half.

MacKenzie Miller cut the Erskine lead to 4-3 with her only goal of the game, a free position shot, with just over two minutes gone by.

11 minutes later, Katy Connery found the back of the net for the second time, burying an unassisted tally that knotted the game at four.

Shanin Darley gave the Crusaders their first lead of the game just two minutes later as her free position shot dribbled into the net.

That was all of the scoring for the next 12 minutes, as the Abbey defense turned away Erskine, which was mired in a streak of three disallowed goals due to illegal sticks.

With 2:03 to play, Connery scored on a free position shot to stretch the lead to a pair and Easter closed the scoring with 36 seconds left, converting her second goal of the game into an empty net as the Fleet had come out to defend. Alyssa Greco recorded the assist.

Belmont Abbey outshot Erskine 23-14 and scooped up 26 ground balls to just 22 for the Fleet.

Connery scored three goals on six shots with six ground balls and three caused turnovers. Easter netted two with four ground balls, two draw control wins and a pair of caused turnovers.

Reilly Johnson played the final 37:26 in the cage and made one save while not allowing a goal.
