Ursinus Finishes Strong to Down Dickinson

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. Ursinus scored eight goals in the second half as the Bears (6-3, 2-1 Centennial) defeated Dickinson (4-5, 1-1 Centennial) 14-9 in a rainy men's lacrosse match-up at Patterson Field on Saturday.

Ursinus defeated the Red Devils for the first time since the 2010 season.

Sophomore midfielder Dylan Spangenberg (Downingtown, Pa.) led the Bears with three goals and two assists, with junior midfielder Jake Weber (Lititz, Pa.) scoring two goals and adding an assist in the win. Ursinus also got two goals each from junior attack Mark Stratton (Lititz, Pa.) and sophomore attack Tucker Noel (North Caldwell, N.J.) with junior attack Steve Smyrl (Glen Mills, Pa.) joining Stratton and Spangenberg with two assists.

Dickinson was led by senior attack Brian Cannon who scored three goals and punched in an assist for the Red Devils. Six other players scored for Dickinson.

After the first quarter ended in a 3-all tie, Dickinson took a 4-3 lead at 13:19 when Tyler Llewellyn scored unassisted. Ursinus responded with three straight goals, one each by Weber, Smyrl and sophomore midfielder James Fairchild (Wayne, Pa.) for a 6-4 lead with 4:43 left. Fairchild scored off of a faceoff 13 seconds after Smyrl's goal.

A 4-0 run to start the third quarter put the game out of reach, as Spangenberg bookended the run with goals, his last coming at eight minutes even to take a 10-6 lead. Dickinson got to within three at 11-8 with 12:01 left in the game, before Ursinus went on a 3-0 run, capped by a goal from Noel at 5:18.

As a team, Ursinus committed just 11 turnovers, was a perfect 15 for 15 on clears, and grabbed 35 groundballs.

Individually, the Bears got six ground balls from sophomore goalkeeper Brian Neff, who also made 14 saves. Junior defender Ryan Ridinger had three caused turnovers.

For Dickinson, senior midfielder Carter Moore had nine groundballs. In goal, sophomore goalkeeper Nick Baxter had 14 saves.

Ursinus takes the week off, before heading to York (Pa.) for a non-conference match-up on Sunday, April 6, at 1:00 p.m.

(Collegeville, Pa.) Dickinson suffered a 14-9 setback at Ursinus College on Saturday. The Red Devils slip to 4-5 overall and 1-1 in the Centennial Conference.

The Red Devils struck first behind an unassisted goal from sophomore Chris Menard (South Hadley, Mass./South Hadley), just 35 seconds into the contest.

The Bears answered at the 13:05 mark, and took a 2-1 lead on an extra-man goal from Dylan Spangenberg, with 10:48 remaining in the first quarter.

The Devils capitalized on an extra-man opportunity, pulling even as sophomore Rob Kendall (Sewickley, Pa./Sewickley Academy) finished an assist from senior Brian Gleason (Darien, Conn./Darien).

Tucker Noel scored for the Bears at the 5:58 mark before senior Brian Cannon (Reisterstown, Md./Loyola Blakefield) found the net off an assist from Gleason to knot the score, 3-3, at the end of the one quarter.

First-year Tyler Llewellyn (Cockeysville, Md./Loyola Blakefield) gave the Devils a 4-3 advantage to open the second period with an unassisted tally. Spangenberg led Ursinus to another extra-man goal, this time feeding Jake Weber at the 7:10 mark.

That triggered a three-goal run, putting Ursinus on top, 6-4. Cannon returned the favor to Gleason, feeding him with 4:22 remaining, to make the scored 6-5 at halftime.

The Bears took control of the game, coming out of halftime to score four straight goals, stretching the advantage to 10-5 as Spangenberg scoring goals in either end of the run.
