Belmont Abbey Can't Quell Lake Erie Storm

Belmont Abbey suffered a 12-8 loss to the visiting Lake Erie Storm this afternoon at Alumni Field. Connor Sellarsand Joey McGinley both scored two goals and goalkeeper Brett Lawless made 15 saves. Lake Erie, which was an NCAA Tournament team last season, improves to 4-3, while the Abbey drops to 5-7.

Today's game was played in a drizzle and a heavy downpour in the last five minutes.

Lake Erie led 3-1 after one, but both teams scored twice in the second period. Scotty Steele opened the second period with a goal to cut the lead to 3-2, but Lake Erie's Connor Regan buried a man up winner to move the lead back to four.

1:13 later, Steele fed Sellars to again close the Storm lead to one, but Lake Erie's Trevor Tarte capped off the scoring at the 2:24 mark to give Lake Erie a 5-3 halftime lead.

Both teams scored three times in the third, as the Crusaders strung together three winners after a Lake Erie goal to tie the game at six. McGinley scored on a man up advantage, followed by a Ryan Callahan score 1:58 later. Sellars then bulled his way through two Storm defenders and scored the tying goal while falling down, tying the game at six with 4:18 left in the third.

Lake Erie answered by scoring five straight goals-the first two closing the third period-to open up an 11-6 lead.

McGinley broke the string with an unassisted goal and Riley Quinlan closed the scoring with 48 seconds left.

Lawless stopped 15 shots in the cage. The Abbey caused seven turnovers as Devin Cruz led the way with three. Jamie Wolf had two while winning 10 of 23 faceoffs.
