Sacred Heart Wins NEC Opener at Robert Morris

Moon Township, Pa. March 29, 2014 Robert Morris saw a two-game winning streak snapped at the hands of Sacred Heart, as the Colonials fell to the Pioneers this afternoon, 9-7.

Despite holding its fifth straight opponent to under 10 goals, Robert Morris (4-5, 1-3 NEC) couldn't generate enough offense to get past Sacred Heart (2-6, 1-0 NEC).

Sophomore Eric Rankel (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown West) lit up the scoreboard first with an unassisted tally less than three minutes into the contest. The Pioneers answered five minutes later, but redshirt senior Taylor Graves (Carlsbad, Calif./Carlsbad) responded on the next face-off after gathering a pass from sophomore James Rahe (Aldergrove, British Columbia/W.J. Mouat).

Goals from freshman Cody Nass (Vancouver, British Columbia/Delta Secondary) and sophomore Luke Laszkiewicz (Oshawa, Ontario/Westminster Prep) extended the Colonials' lead to 4-1, but Sacred Heart came back with three tallies in the final 10 minutes of the half to tie the game.

The Pioneers took their first lead of the game with 13:07 left in the third quarter, but RMU received a second goal from Graves to knot it up at five.

Sacred Heart retook the lead with three unanswered goals. Despite fourth quarter tallies from freshman JonPatrik Kealey (Ottawa, Ontario/South Carleton) and Rankel, the Pioneers held on thanks to a goal with 1:17 remaining in regulation.

Senior Brian Bohn (Mars, Pa./Seneca Valley) made a career-high 16 saves in defeat, while his classmate Sean Meagher (Chesterfield, Mo./St. Louis University) caused five turnovers and collected five groundballs.

Robert Morris is back in action on Wednesday at No. 4 Maryland. The bout between the Colonials and Terrapins is set for a 5:00 p.m. start from Capital One Field at Byrd Stadium.
