Quick Start Propels Utica Past Hartwick

UTICA, NY- Host Utica (5-2, 1-1 Empire 8) scored five times in the opening 7:38 to take control early in a 16-9 victory over Hartwick Saturday at Charles Gaetano Stadium. The Hawks rallied near the end of the first half to close the gap to five, but the Pioneers tallied five times to start the second half to pull away.

Lauren Rosenberg (Smithtown, NY/Commack) hit the 30-goal mark for the season in the game with a team-high four goals for Hartwick. Emily Jweid (Marcy, NY/Whitesboro) scored twice and notched two assists and Kia Ference (Schenectady, NY/Schenectady) also had a pair of scores.

The Pioneers got on the board 2:16 into the game on a Megan Kane tally and Courtney Wheeler then netted three straight goals in a 3:04 span for a 4-0 UC lead. At 22:22, Utica got its fifth goal on a Colleen Dowling effort.

Rosenberg got one back for 'Wick at the 17:33 mark of the half. Jweid picked up the assist, which was her sixteenth of the year.

UC would tally at 12:53 and 10:20 for a 7-1 lead and another at 5:30 to increase the margin to seven. Rosenberg answered for the Hawks with her thirtieth of the season at 4:09. After Morgan DuPont scored her second of the game at 3:20, Rosenberg answered with a helper from Jweid 18 seconds later. Jweid would then find the net on an 8-meter shot with 2:35 remaining to cut the deficit to 9-4 at the break.

In the second half, the Pioneers scored five times inside of 10 minutes to open up a 14-4 margin. Kane and Rebecca Plunkett each had two scores in the rally.

The Hawks would out-score the Pioneers 5-2 over the final 16 and a half minutes. Ference scored at 16:37 on a free-position goal. After Kane scored her fifth of the game, Ali Sisco (Kendall Park, NJ/South Brunswick), Jweid, Rosenberg, and Ference all would register goals in a 9:14 span to trim the UC lead to six, 15-9, but only 2:53 remained in the contest. Wheeler closed out the scoring at 1:21 for the hosts.

Meg Luce (Saratoga Springs, NY/Saratoga Springs) led Hartwick with eight ground balls on the day. Ference, Sisco, Mandy Van Auken (Altamont, NY/Guilderland) and Meagan Wright (Mahopac, NY/Mahopac) each had three. Luce and Jweid each grabbed three ground balls and Ference and goalie Steph Luce (Saratoga Springs, NY/Saratoga Springs) each caused three turnovers.

Steph Luce would make 11 stops in the Hartwick cage. Utica keeper Erin Jacobson made 12 saves for the Pioneers.

Utica finished the contest with a 35-24 edge in shots. The Pioneers also had advantages in ground balls (38-32) and draws (15-11).

Hartwick plays its final road game of the season next Saturday, April 5 at Nazareth. The Hawks are then home for the final four games of the regular season.
