Hartwick Falls to St. John Fisher

ONEONTA, NY- The Hawks' and Cardinals' men's lacrosse teams played a tight game throughout four quarters of play but it was visiting St. John Fisher that came out winning in the end, 10-4, on Saturday afternoon at Wright Stadium. The loss drops 'Wick to 2-5 overall and 0-2 in the Empire 8. Fisher improves to 4-3 overall and 1-1 in the E8.

The Cardinals scored the game's first goal at 12:57 of the first quarter. Hartwick responded with scores from Roy Simmons (Fayetteville, NY/Fayetteville-Manlius) and Conor McGoldrick (Longmeadow, MA/Longmeadow) to go ahead 2-1 with 9:42 remaining in the period. Fisher scored three straight times, with the last one coming just .2 of a second to go, to move ahead 4-2.

Fisher carried its momentum into the second quarter when Gary Bova scored unassisted at 13:58. Mike Vaglica (Newton, MA/Newton North) ended the Cardinals' scoring run with his 14th goal of the season with 11:06 to play in the second frame as 'Wick narrowed the Fisher lead to 5-3. The Cardinals, however, tacked on two more goals to end the period and led 7-3 at the half.

The second half was a different story as both teams played tough defense. The Hawks got to within three goals of tying the contest up, 7-4, with just less than 12 minutes showing on the game clock in the third period. The score remained that way until 8:42 to play in the period when Fisher's Tim Wagner connected with Jeff Wester to put the Cardinals up 8-4.

It was 8-4 Fisher for nearly half of the final quarter as both teams exchanged turnovers. Following a failed clear attempt from Hartwick, the Cardinals took advantage as Jacob Aldrich shot the ball past Hawk goalie Michael Rourke (Long Beach, NY/Long Beach) and into the net to increase the Fisher lead to 9-4 with 8:41 left to play.

'Wick had several good scoring chances but had shots from Brown and Simmons that bounced off of the goal post and opportunities from Cody Ciolino (Nesconset, NY/Sachem North) and Simmons go just off the mark. The Cardinals completed the scoring in the game when Nick Costello scored off a pass from Drew Brown with 56 seconds left in the game.

Vaglica, Brown, Simmons, and McGoldrick all scored once for the Hawks. Vaglica and Cody Petillo (Holbrook, NY/Sachem North) tallied assists. Rourke had 15 saves between the pipes.

The Cardinals received goals from 10 different players. Brett Farrell, Wester, Wagner, Greg Ramsden, Nick Rossi, Bova, Dante Giordano, Aldrich, Kevin Bronson, and Costello scored one goal apiece. Farrell dished out a team-high three assists. Tanner Swan turned away eight shots in goal.

Shots and ground balls were nearly identical with the Cardinals leading in both categories, 40-23, and 40-24. Kevin Rourke (Long Beach, NY/Long Beach) picked up a team high five ground balls with Michael Rourke and Taylor Lee (Germantown, NY/Red Hook) both getting four each.

Hartwick will aim for its first conference victory when it hosts Stevens on Wednesday afternoon at Wright Stadium. Game time is set for 4:00 p.m.
