Nazareth Victorious at Elmira

ELMIRA, N.Y. -- Troy Haefele scored five goals and Luke Wooters added two goals and four assists for visiting Nazareth Saturday as the Golden Flyers defeated Elmira in an Empire 8 Conference men's lacrosse game, 17-11.

The game, played at Elmira Free Academy, enabled Nazareth to record its second straight win and to improve to 4-5 overall and 2-0 in conference play. Elmira is 0-6 overall and 0-2 in the Empire 8. In addition to Haefele and Wooters, senior midfielder Brian Wright scored three times, sophomore Matt O'Neill scored twice and seniors Chris Aycock and Collins Clark each scored once and added two assists.

Elmira scored the first two goals of the game before Nazareth scored seven straight to take command. Five different players scored in the first period, starting with Wright, who tallied off an assist from O'Neill. Goals by Nick Arnold, Haefele, O'Neill and Aycock followed as Nazareth led 5-2 after 15 minutes.

Wright's second goal of the game came just 53 seconds into the second quarter and freshman Luke Longo netted his second goal of the season just 14 seconds after that to extend the lead to 7-2. Elmira interrupted the string by scoring three of the next four goals, but Haefele scored three more times before halftime and Wooters also scored to make it 11-6 Nazareth at the break.

Haefele's fifth goal of the game came at 11:37 of the third quarter, but Elmira delivered three straight goals in a span of 1:08 to close within 12-9 with 8:16 left in the third. The Golden Flyers doused any Soaring Eagle comeback hopes by scoring the next four goals bridging the third and fourth quarters. Wooters' second goal of the game made it 13-9.

Senior Chris Benza then scored his first goal of the season even though Nazareth was in a man-down situation. Clark added a man-up goal off a pass from Wooters with 1:16 left in the quarter, then O'Neill scored the first goal of the fourth quarter as Nazareth's lead swelled to 16-9. A man-up goal by Wright, his seventh goal over the last two games, closed out the Nazareth scoring.

Nazareth enjoyed a 62-37 advantage in shots and junior Drew Simoneau had his usual strong day at the faceoff x by winning 21 of 28 draws. Sophomore Scott Brown played all 60 minutes in goal and had 12 saves. Myles Richards and Brian Conzola each scored three goals for Elmira and David Evert had five assists.

The Golden Flyers continue their conference schedule Wednesday with a road game at Utica at 4:00 p.m.
