Sutko's 11 Points Not Enough as Cyclones Fall at GMU

GWYNEDD VALLEY, Pa. - Despite a career-high 11 points from sophomore Devin Sutko (Cinnaminson, N.J./Cinnaminson), Centenary was edged 16-15 at Gwynedd Mercy in Colonial States Athletic Conference action on Saturday.

Sutko set a new Centenary single-game assist record with seven and scored four goals. She bested the previous assist record of five, which she shared with three other players. All seven helpers came during the second half.

Her 11 points were tied for the fourth-highest, single-game total in school history and were the most by a Cyclone since 2010.

Kelsey Yori netted five goals during the opening 14 minutes of the game to help Gwynedd Mercy jump out to a 6-1 lead.

Centenary battled back with five of the game's next seven goals, including two each from Sutko and freshman Abby Voelkner(Denville, N.J./Morris Knolls), to pull within two.

Amy Powell ended the Cyclones' run with her second goal and then assisted on Aubrey Cook's score just before the half as the Griffins extended their lead back to four.

GMU led 13-7 before Sutko found Voelkner, who sent her second goal into the back of the net, starting a string of three consecutive Centenary goals.

Sophomore Carlie Schmitt's (Stewartstown, Pa./Kennard-Dale) score with 15:33 left made the deficit four. After Powell fired in her third goal of the day, Schmitt scored four consecutive goals to bring the Cyclones within one.

Schmitt's final tally came with 1:06 to play, but the Cyclones were unable to control the ensuing draw and GMU managed to run the clock out, ending Centenary's bid for its first victory.

Schmitt scored six times, while Sutko scooped up three ground balls. Sophomore Kelly Conklin (Monroe Twp., N.J./Monroe Twp.) collected six ground balls and recorded five caused turnovers.

Yori fired in nine goals and Powell added four scores and a pair of assists.

Centenary visits Mt. St. Vincent in a non-league game on Monday at 4:00 pm.
