Scranton Scores Eight Unanswered to Defeat W&J

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Scranton scored eight unanswered goals in the second quarter to pull away from Washington & Jefferson and earn a 14-5 Landmark Conference men's lacrosse victory on Saturday at a rain-soaked Alexandre Stadium.

The Royals (6-4, 2-0) led 2-0 early in the game, but W&J (4-7) closed to within 2-1 after one quarter when John Bursch scored an extra-man goal off a pass from Kyle Heinig 10 seconds before the opening quarter ended.

Scranton dominated the second period as Gus Strum netted three goals and Alec Mikrut added a pair to push the Royal lead to 10-1 at halftime. The Royals added to their unanswered goal stretch with the first three tallies of the third period and W&J never recovered.

Scranton held a 48-25 shot advantage and won 17 of 22 face-offs. Strum finished the game with four goals to lead to Scranton offense.

Bursch had two goals for the Presidents, while Casey Smallwood and Tim Angell both netted one. Angell's goal was the 95th of his career. Conor Crowe suffered the loss after making 12 first-half saves.

W&J hopes to snap its five-match losing streak next Saturday when it travels to Washington, D.C., to face Catholic (1:00 pm).

WASHINGTON, Pa.-If University of Scranton head men's lacrosse coach Doug Sage had any concerns regarding his team's recent scoring slump, they were quickly dispelled in this afternoon's Landmark Conference match-up against Washington & Jefferson at Alexandre Stadium.

After struggling offensively in their last two games, the Royals exploded for eight goals in the second period to break away from a 2-1 first-period lead and cruised to a 14-5 victory. The win snaps a two-game losing streak for Scranton, now 6-4 overall and 2-0 in the conference.

Senior attacker Gus Sturm (Devon, Pa./Conastoga) led the Royals with four goals and senior midfielder John Gregitis (Wayne, Pa./St. Joseph's Preparatory), junior attacker Anthony Lombardo (Mendham, NJ/Mendham), and sophomore midfielder Alec Mikrut (Belle Mead, NJ/Montgomery) each finished with two goals and an assist.

The Presidents, who fell to 4-7 overall and 0-3 in the Landmark Conference, were led by junior midfielder John Bursch (Latrobe, Pa./Greensburg Central Catholic) with two goals and junior attacker Tim Angell (Andover, Mass./Governor's Academy) finished with a goal and an assist.

The Royals held a decided advantage in nearly every statistical category. They out-shot the Presidents 37-22, held a 37-22 margin in ground balls, and won 17 of 22 face-offs to post their third straight victory in the series.

Junior Matt Finor (Churchville, Pa./Council Rock South) won 16 of 17 face-off attempts for the Royals and finished with six ground balls, junior defenseman Ryan Millard (Long Valley, NJ/West Morris Central) scooped up a team-high seven ground balls, and sophomore goalkeeper Nicholas McKaba (Bridgewater, NJ/Bridgewater-Raritan) finished with eight saves in over 51 minutes of action. Freshmen Conor Beers (Woolwich Township, NJ/Kingsway Regional) and Conor Coughlan (Massapequa Park, NY/Massapequa) each saw action in goal today and combined to stop three shots.

Today's 14 goals were a season-high for the Royals and the most during Sage's two-year tenure as head coach.

Scranton will return home to host Elizabethtown College in the first of a four-game home stand this Wednesday, April 2, at 4:00 p.m. at Fitzpatrick Field.
