No. 19 Gettysburg Cruises Past Muhlenberg

GETTYSBURG, Pa. Eleven Bullets scored a goal and the 19th-ranked Gettysburg College men's lacrosse team won its fourth game in a row, defeating Muhlenberg College 18-4 in Centennial Conference action at a rainy Shirk Field at Musselman Stadium on Saturday.

Gettysburg (6-3, 2-0 CC) outshot the Mules 60-16 and used a 9-0 run spanning the first through the third quarters to open up a 10-1 lead early in the second half.

The Bullets, who doubled up Muhlenberg in ground balls (40-20), have outscored their opponents 63-12 during their winning streak.

Junior Robby Maddux (Baltimore, Md./St. Paul's) scored four goals and handed out two assists for the Bullets while junior Bijan Firouzan (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) posted three goals and two assists. Senior Martin Manilla (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) registered two goals and three assists, and sophomore Jameson Smith (Glen Ridge, N.J./Glen Ridge) added a pair of goals.

Freshman Kyle Hewett (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) enjoyed an outstanding game at the X, winning 16 of 22 face-offs and picking up 10 ground balls. Senior Jon Maddalone (Carolina Beach, N.C./Choate Rosemary Hall [Conn.]) made six saves over 54:55 of action in goal.

Adam Schlauch recorded 13 saves for Muhlenberg (1-8, 0-3 CC).

Manilla scored just 13 seconds into the game before Brad D'Alessandro tied it up for the Mules with 10:56 on the clock. But that's when the Bullets embarked on their decisive run, as Maddux scored back-to-back goals before Firouzan got into the act, striking with 7:04 on the clock as the Orange and Blue led 4-1 at the end of the first quarter.

After the first six minutes of the second quarter went by without a goal, the Bullets found paydirt three times over 1:06 midway through the period. Junior Steven Mahon (Setauket, N.Y./St. Anthony's), Firouzan, and senior Henry Tesar (Lake Bluff, Ill./Avon Old Farms [Conn.]) all scored to make it 7-1 with 7:51 remaining in the half. Senior Derek Ruebling (Morristown, N.J./Delbarton) tallied with 2:05 showing before Smith found the back of the net nine seconds before the horn to make it a 9-1 game at the half.

Smith scored again less than two minutes into the third quarter to complete Gettysburg's run. Austin Akner and Michael Heenan scored for the Mules to make it 10-3, but Maddux and Firouzan responded with one goal apiece to push the advantage to 12-3. Tom Glancy scored with two seconds on the clock to make it 12-4 heading into the final 15 minutes.

Six different Bullets scored in the fourth quarter as Gettysburg ended the game on a 6-0 run. Junior Jack Harvazinski (Setauket, N.Y./Ward Melville), Maddux, freshman Austin Nadeau (Walpole, Mass./Proctor Academy [N.H.]), Manilla, junior Jimmy Morris (Waccabuc, N.Y./John Jay), and freshman Samuel Woodcock (Clifton Park, N.Y./Berkshire School) all converted in the final 15 minutes. It was the first career goal for both Nadeau and Woodcock.

The Bullets continue their season next Saturday, when they host Swarthmore College at 1:00 p.m. in another Centennial Conference tilt.
