Yeowomen Knockoff Kenyon in NCAC Opener

Oberlin, Ohio Oberlin put forth its best effort of the season, upending the visiting Ladies of Kenyon 14-6 on Saturday afternoon.

The victory marked the Yeowomen's first triumph over the Ladies since April 27, 2002 when they prevailed 10-7. Last season Kenyon finished 13-3 overall and 7-1 in the league. With today's loss, Kenyon dropped to 6-2 overall and 0-1 in league play, while the Yeowomen remained perfect at 5-0 and 1-0 in the NCAC.

The sophomore duo of Grace Barlow and Suzanna Doak each scored four goals to guide the Yeowomen attack. Junior Kate Hanick also netted a hat trick to run her season total to 12.

Hanick netted the first goal of the game at the 24:31 mark and then Barlow followed with an acrobatic finish as she drove through an array of Kenyon defenders before scoring her first goal of the day.

Oberlin was later leading 3-2, but Doak pushed the Yeowomen lead out to three with two goals in a span of 40 seconds. The first came when Oberlin was a player up due to a Kenyon yellow card. The Ladies would score two of the final three goals of the first half, but Oberlin still took a 6-4 lead into the intermission.

In the second half the Yeowomen never let up as they completely controlled the run of play. The two foes traded scores early on as the Yeowomen led 7-5 before ripping off six straight scores in a 10-minute span. Barlow started the run by scoring a short-handed goal and would later add one more during the spurt. Hanick cashed in the final two goals of the run, while first-years Morgan Daruwala and Hannah Heinke-Green also got into the mix.

Junior Bronwen Schumacher capped the game's scoring with her third tally of the season.

First-year Alexa L'Insalata had the best game of her young career, coming away with a season-high 13 saves, while making multiple stops when the game was still in the balance early on.

Both teams finished with 27 shots, but the Yeowomen won the ground ball battle 19-14. Kenyon did finish with a slight 12-10 edge in draw controls.

The Yeowomen will be back in action when they travel to Denison University on Tuesday. The opening draw is set for 5:00 p.m.
