Hampden-Sydney Shuts Down Virginia Wesleyan

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA The Hampden-Sydney defense shut down one of the most prolific offenses in the ODAC in an 11-5 win over Virginia Wesleyan.

The Marlins were averaging 14.9 goals per contest and hadn't scored fewer than nine in any contest, but the Tigers shut the door on the Virginia Wesleyan offense.

Two unassisted goals from Thomas Armstrong (Charlotte, NC/Charlotte Latin) in the opening period provided the Tigers a 2-0 advantage. Mike Moran got Virginia Wesleyan on the board just over a minute into the second quarter. But that would be all the noise the Marlins would make in the half. Duncan Morris (Charlottesville, VA/Christchurch) and James Hughes (Raleigh, NC/Middle Creek) each found the back of the net twice in the quarter to propel H-SC to a 6-1 halftime advantage.

Josh Currier opened the third quarter with two quick scores to trim the deficit to 6-3 with 11:14 left in the third. Hampden-Sydney pulled away from there and scores from Abbot Wallenborn (Crozet, VA/Western Albemarle), Hughes, Fleet Jernigan (Kill Devil Hills, NC/First Flight), and Armstrong made it a 10-3 Tigers lead after three quarters. Currier and Moran recorded back-to-back goals in a one minute span midway through the fourth but could not muster enough shots to get back into the game.

Armstrong posted three goals and one assist, Hughes contributed three scores, and Jake Koferl (Huntersville, NC/Lake Norman) handed out three assists. Jared Arntzen (Atlanta, GA/Blue Ridge (VA)) went 9-13 on face-offs with four ground balls. David Noftsinger (Richmond, VA/Collegiate) had another strong game in net with 11 saves including several point-blank stops.

Currier posted a hat trick for the Marlins while Moran added two. Nick Pappas came in to the game as the ODAC's leading goal scorer and was shut out. Rory Finnegan posted 14 saves.

H-SC won 11 of 20 face-offs and outshot the Marlins 46-29.

Hampden-Sydney travels to Greensboro, NC on Wednesday for an ODAC contest vs. Guilford College at 5:00 pm.
