3d Rising Player Evaluations: Lone Star Prospects I

Sam Romano 2015
Syracuse Commit
Position: Midfield
Sub Position: Two-Way
Rating: Legit

Many work hard to become a great shooter. Sam Romano worked hard to become a great scorer. Quite simply, Sam is the best midfielder I've seen in the Lone Star State. He does it all: score on the run, time and room, finish in tight, dodge to feed, super glue defense, ferocious on loose balls, and on and on. Romano will be one of the first offensive players from Texas who will make an impact at the Division I level. Don't take my word for it ... watch Sam's sophomore year highlights below.

Ben Kelly 2014
Uncommitted
Position: LSM
Sub Position: With Ball
Rating: Watch List

In the run up to the 2013 state championship game, Ben Kelly's play between the boxes was a vital piston in the Eagles's motor. When the ball is on the turf, opposing midfielders should look to turn and burn, because Kelly is looking to create offense. Ben is a vacuum on loose balls and is looking to move them quickly off the dirt. Sometimes over-pursuing and getting out of position, Ben makes up for it with hustle and trail checks that create problems for middies looking to settle in to their offense. A senior, he is looking for a home next season. He would be a great pick-up for any coach looking for a playmaking LSM.

McKinney

Cameron Close 2016 (reclassified; post-grad at The Hill Academy)
Denver Commit
Position: Midfield
Sub Position: Alley/Wing Dodger
Rating: Legit

Close is a bulldog. A hard-nosed lefty midfielder out of McKinney, Cam's lethal shooting draws attention on the field and opens up scoring opportunities for his teammates. Cam excels at getting to space, setting his feet and firing off a bazooka warhead into the offside corner. He has shown a knack for scoring in tight, on the run, as well as setting his teammates up with nice feeds. A PG year at The Hill Academy will refine Cam's game and prepare him for Denver's box-field hybrid offense.

Johnny Santos 2014
VMI Commit
Position: Midfield
Sub Position: Face-Off/Two-Way
Rating: Player

Another grinding, blue-collar midfielder out of McKinney, Johnny Santos will take his in-your-face play to D1 VMI next season. Johnny is a smart F/O midfielder: able to utilize his wings or win it forward/backward to himself. With the ball, Santos can bury the rock with a blistering time and room shot or on the move. In a scramble, his physicality works in his favor, as he usually comes up with the ball in traffic. Another nice pickup for VMI, Johnny plays the game with a relentless fury ... what coach wouldn't want that in a midfielder?

Southlake

Luke Millican 2017
Uncommitted
Position: Goalie
Sub Position: Quick
Rating: Player

Another high-level freshman goalie, Millican quickly established himself as one of the top goalies in Texas and in his class nationally. Luke, a football quarterback, is an athletic goalie active in the riding game and comfortable handling the ball under pressure. Millican played well against regional powers Dallas Jesuit, Highland Park, and Arapahoe (CO). His communication and clearing skills are solid (particularly for a freshman) and will continue to improve over the course of his high school career. Staying in good position and not moving before the ball is released, Luke forces the shooter to beat him with a well-placed shot. His dedication to continual improvement is an integral habit excellent goaltenders share.
