BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Seven players scored two goals apiece as No. 13 Colby defeated the University of New England, 18-6, in non-conference action Tuesday afternoon (Apr. 1) at the Big Blue Turf.

The nationally-ranked Mules (5-3) used a seven-goal run late in the 1st half to gain separation from the Nor'easters (6-4). Through a little more than 20 minutes the visitors held a slim 4-3 advantage, but extended it to 11-5 at the halftime break.

Colby junior Abby Hatch (Wilbraham, Mass.) finished with a match-high five points on two goals and three assists, and had a game-best five draw controls to help establish a 16-9 cushion in the category. Also scoring twice was senior Alex Mintz (Mountain Lakes, N.J.), juniors Lindsay McCabe (Weston, Mass.) and Sara Miller (Andover, Mass.), sophomores Abby Hooper (Nahant, Mass.) and Dana Swaffield (Dover, Mass.), and first-year Cassie Rodgers (Marblehead, Mass.). Senior Sarah Lux (Manlius, N.Y.) dished out four assists.

Three goalies split the time between the pipes for the Mules. Senior Michelle Burt (Woodbridge, Conn.) made four stops over the initial 30 minutes, junior Claire Dickson (Darien, Conn.) turned away four shots during the next 18:18, and sophomore Sarah Evans (Cohasset, Mass.) posted two saves in the final 11:42. Seniors Katharine Eddy (Cheshire, Conn.) and Kirsten Karis (Southborough, Mass.) helped the defensive effort with three caused turnovers each. Eddy also chipped in with a goal and two assists on offense.

For UNE, senior Hannah Tavella (Putnam Valley, N.Y.) and junior Hannah Warren (Harrison, Maine) both scored a pair of goals, and juniors Gina Newsome (Danbury, Conn.) and Rachel Schwaner (Holderness, N.H.) also found the back of the cage for Big Blue. Schwaner had team-highs of three draw controls and three ground balls.

The Nor'easters received six saves out of sophomore starting goalie Lauryn Huck (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.), who then gave way to classmate Courtney Kendall (Waltham, Mass.) for the entire 2nd half. Kendall denied three shots in the closing period.

Both sides are back in action on Saturday with league matches. Colby is slated to host No. 3 Amherst at 12:00 p.m.; UNE heads to Roger Williams for a 3:30 p.m. contest.
