Gannon Suffers First-Ever Loss to Slippery Rock

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - Slippery Rock ripped off the first seven goals of the contest and cruised to an 18-7 victory against Gannon Tuesday night in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) women's lacrosse action. It represented the Rock's first win in eight matches during the all-time series.

Gannon didn't score its first goal until Ashley Mozingo's (Fallston, Md./Fallston) free-position shot 16:25 into the contest. The Rock lead later stood at 9-2 after Christie Valentine's (Friendship, Md./Annapolis Area Christian) score off a Kimberly Neagle (Auburn, N.Y./Auburn) pass with 9:27 left in the first half. However, the home squad rolled off the final three goals to assume a 12-2 edge at the break.

Another scoring drought of 17 minutes and 42 seconds that spanned both halves put Gannon behind the eight ball. The Lady Knights trailed 13-2 until getting back-to-back goals from Neagle and Tessa Mitchell (Rush, N.Y./Rush Henrietta) to stop the clock with 16:28 remaining.

But it was the Slippery Rock defense that stepped up once again and put the match on ice. The Rock scored five consecutive goals while holding Gannon scoreless for another 13 minutes and 10 seconds. Late goals by Kelsey Bright (San Diego, Calif./Rancho Bernardo) and Mozingo during the final 66 seconds accounted for the final 18-7 score.

Neagle headlined the Gannon offensive attack with two goals, two assists and four points. Mozingo also tallied two goals. Valentine and Mitchell finished with one goal and two assists each. Bright had the final score.

Margaret Maslyn (Penn Yan, N.Y./Penn Yan Academy), Carly Shaw (Somers, N.Y./Somers) and Chrissy Yoest (Erie, Pa./McDowell) combined to play 60 minutes in goal, making 10 saves while allowing 18 goals.

Gannon dropped to 5-5 overall and 2-3 in the PSAC with Tuesday's setback. Slippery Rock improved to 4-5 overall while picking up its first league win in four attempts. The Lady Knights return to action Sunday, April 6 against Shippensburg at Gannon University Field. Game time is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
