Maritime Drops Conference Game at Mount St. Mary

NEWBURGH, N.Y. (April 1, 2014) Maritime lost on the road Tuesday night at Skyline Conference opponent Mount St. Mary, 14-2. The Privateers fall to 2-6 overall (0-3 Skyline) in defeat, while the Knights improve to 4-3 (3-0 Skyline) with the win.

Freshman Hannah Pell (Southampton, N.Y./Westhampton Beach) and sophomore Leanne Lavelle (New Windsor, N.Y./Washingtonville) both found the back of the net for Maritime and in goal sophomore Meghin Paczkowski (Oceanside, N.Y./Oceanside) made eight saves and picked up a game-high five groundballs. Freshman Jane Quinn (Oakdale, N.Y./Connetquot) recorded four groundballs.

The Knights spread out 10 goals over the opening 30 minutes and took that 10-0 lead into the halftime break. After another goal by MSMC to open the scoring the second half, Pell scored her seventh goal of the year to make the score 11-1. The Mount scored twice more before Lavelle found the twine with her team-leading 15th goal of the season, however the Knights closed out the scoring with 7:19 to go in the game.

Mount St. Mary was led by senior Erica Massmann, who scored a game-high five goals, while freshman Katie Gattoni tallied a hat trick with three goals. Two players scored a pair of goals apiece for MSMC, sophomores Nicole Scicutella and Jen Gries, and senior Nicole Palmieri and sophomore Katie McGinnis rounded out the scoring. Palmieri also added three assists, while Scicutella and McGinnins chipped in with two helpers. In net, sophomore Deidre Ray made six saves in the winning effort.

The Privateers return to action this Saturday with a home game against Skyline rival Sage College. The contest is set to start at 1:00 p.m. at Reinhart Field.
