Nazareth Downs Utica for Third Straight Win

UTICA, N.Y. -- Senior Chris Aycock and junior Will Fallo each scored three goals and added two assists for visiting Nazareth Wednesday, as the Golden Flyers won their third straight men's lacrosse game with an 11-5 victory over Utica.

Nazareth evened its overall record at 5-5 and improved to 3-0 in Empire 8 Conference games. Utica dropped to 4-5 overall and 1-1 in conference play.

Playing without two of its top three scorers in sophomore Luke Wooters and senior Trevar Haefele due to injuries, Nazareth also got two goals and one assist from sophomore Troy Haefele and one goal each from senior middies Collin Clark and Brian Wright as well as senior long-stick Mark Pinski, who netted his first goal of the season and third of his career. Junior Drew Simoneau, the Division III leader in ground balls per game at 13.44, won 13 of 18 face-offs and collected 11 ground balls.

Nazareth never trailed, but the game was close in the first quarter as Nazareth scored four times, including two goals by Haefele. The Golden Flyers then scored five straight in the second quarter to take a commanding advantage, 9-2, into the halftime break. Wright, Fallo and Aycock each cashed in on man-up opportunities, while Clark and Aycock each scored with the teams at even strength.

Fallo added a pair of goals, his sixth and seventh of the season, for all the second-half scoring for the Golden Flyers, who managed to keep the Pioneers in check. Utica scored twice early in the fourth quarter to pull within 10-5, but Haefele assisted on Fallo's final tally with 5:28 to go.

Nazareth had a 38-28 advantage in shots and a 24-20 edge in ground balls. Long-stick midfielder Jonathan VanOrden had four ground balls and two caused turnovers. Sophomore Scott Brown played all 60 minutes in goal and had eight saves.

Nazareth is home Saturday for an Empire 8 Conference game against Hartwick at 3:00 p.m.
