Valiants Bitten by Bulldogs

CENTER VALLEY, Pa. Manhattanville dropped its Freedom Conference opener on Wednesday, falling to the Bulldogs of DeSales by a final score of 14-4. Manhattanville goals were scored by sophomore Connor Normandin (Stratford, Conn./Bunnell) (2), as well as freshman Colin Morrissey (Shelton, Conn./St. Joseph) as well as junior Corey Balog.

The two teams swapped goals in the first quarter while keeping the game close. After DeSales jumped out to a 1-0 lead, Connor Normandin (Stratford, Conn./Bunnell) picked up his first tally of the day with 6:55 remaining in the quarter to even the game at 1-1. DeSales would pick up another goal before Corey Balog, scoring on the man-up opportunity with 1:16 remaining in the first, notched the score at 2-2.

It was all DeSales after that as the Bulldogs went on to score 12 of the next 14 goals to earn the victory. The Bulldogs offense was firing on all cylinders Wednesday thanks in large part to junior attacker Ryan Loughlin, who finished with four goals, as well as midfielders Nate Blevins and Justin Wilson who tallied two goals apiece.

Freshman Andrew Murray (Yonkers, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) extended his point streak to eight games with his assist on Normandin's second goal of the game, coming with just 18 seconds remaining in the first half. Freshman goaltender Ian Reill (East Rockaway, N.Y./East Rockaway) was only able to record 10 saves on 24 shots in the contest.

The defeat is a tough one for the Valiants as they looked to start off conference play on a high note. The team will need to regroup quickly as they face the Arcadia Knights on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. in another Freedom Conference match-up. With only six games remaining on the season, the Valiants have their playoff hopes in their hands as even three wins could be enough to get Manhattanville into the Freedom Conference tournament.
