Hartwick Denied by Stevens in Empire 8 Play

ONEONTA, NY- A tightly contested second quarter that saw Hartwick trail by only two goals gave way to visiting Stevens scoring five straight times spanning the second and third periods, as the Ducks won 19-9 on Wednesday afternoon at Wright Stadium. The loss drops the Hawks to 2-6 overall and 0-3 in the Empire 8 while Stevens evens its record at 5-5 and is 2-0 in the conference.

The Ducks got on the scoreboard first at 13:45 in the first quarter on a man-up goal by Charlie Cronin. The Hawks answered back exactly one minute later when Mike Vaglica (Newton, Ma/Newton North) scored unassisted to even the contest up at 1-1. The two teams traded goals before the Ducks scored twice to end the first frame ahead 4-2.

Stevens increased its advantage to 7-2 with three straight goals to begin the second stanza. 'Wick clawed its way back with a score from Cody Ciolino (Nesconset, NY/Sachem North) and followed that with two man-up goals by Cody Petillo (Holbrook, NY/Sachem North) to trail only 7-5 with 6:22 left in the quarter. The Ducks, however, tacked on three goals within a two minute span to go into halftime up10-5.

Stevens carried its late first momentum into the third period with goals by Matt Ferentini and Cronin to go up 12-5 at 8:34. Zach Gropper (Syosset, NY/Syosset) scored once with 5:39 left in the third frame and again 48 seconds into the final period to get the Hawks to within six goals but that was as close as Hartwick could get as the Ducks proved to be too much. The Ducks scored six times in the fourth period before Dylan Malloy (Kings Park, NY/Kings Park) tallied the Hawks' last goal of the day with 21 seconds to play.

Gropper scored three times to lead Hartwick on the afternoon. Petillo had two goals. Sean Brown (Plesantville, NY/Pleasantville), Vaglica, Ciolino, and Malloy all had one tally.

Michael Rourke (Long Beach, NY/Long Beach) took the loss in goal and turned away 17 Duck shots. Matthew Galvin (Medway, MA/Medway) relieved him late in the fourth quarter and came up with one save.

Cronin and Michael Maroon both scored a game-high five goals for Stevens. Ferentini added three goals. Andrew Scrutchfield, and Michael Serrante had a pair of scores. Colin Sawula and Connor Lynch contriubuted one goal apiece.

Kevin Rafferty had eight saves for the Ducks between the pipes. Anthony Setola played 7:08 and had one save.

Stevens had a wide margin in shots, 60-25, and in ground ball pickups, 49-30. Taylor Lee (Germantown, NY/Red Hook) had six ground balls to lead 'Wick.

Hartwick heads on the road for its next game against Nazareth on Saturday. Game time will be at 3:00 p.m.

ONEONTA, N.Y. (April 2, 2014) Stevens leveled its record to 5-5 on the season with a 19-9 Empire 8 Conference victory at Hartwick on Wednesday afternoon. Stevens has now won four straight and claimed each contest by an average of seven goals.

The Ducks jumped out to a 1-0 lead on a man-up goal from senior Charlie Cronin (Northampton, Mass.) just 1:15 into the game off a pass from junior Michael Maroon (Virginia Beach, Va). Hartwick then evened the game at 1-1 a minute later before sophomore Michael Serrante (Bridgewater, N.J.) received a pass from Cronin 24 seconds after to put Stevens back up, 2-1.

Hartwick answered with another first quarter goal at the 9:46 mark only to watch Stevens score again on Cronin's second tally with 8:11 to go in the period. Sophomore Andrew Scrutchfield (Lewes, Del.) closed out the first with 53 seconds left off Maroon's second assist.
