Hot Start Propels No. 6 Gettysburg Past Dickinson

GETTYSBURG, Pa. Junior Mandy Buell (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) poured in five goals and senior Kelsey Markiewicz (Taconic, Conn./Berkshire School, Mass.) added two goals and two assists to power sixth-ranked Gettysburg past Dickinson 15-7 in Centennial Conference action Wednesday night at Clark Field.

It was all Gettysburg (8-1, 3-0 CC) in the early going as the hosts ripped off seven consecutive goals to break a 1-1 tie. Buell started the run with three consecutive scores, while Markiewicz added a goal and two assists. Sophomore defender Emily Tropsa (Darien, Conn./Darien) turned in her first collegiate score and sophomore Amanda Borucki (Westminster, Md./North Carroll) capped the run at 7:34.

Dickinson (7-3, 2-1 CC) began its rally with the final two goals of the opening frame. Nearly 11 minutes went by without a goal to start the final period as both teams just missed on scoring opportunities. The Red Devils subbed in a new keeper and the change proved effective as freshman Tara Cuddihy stopped the first shot she saw on goal by Markiewicz. Gettysburg goalie Shannon Keeler (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) was also up to the task, posting three saves in the first eight minutes of the second half.

The visitors tallied the first goal of the period and after two more saves by Cuddihy, Dickinson struck again with Sydney Stern finding Katie Iverson in front of the net to slice the deficit to 8-5 with 17:07 on the board.

It didn't take long for the Bullets to answer as senior Bailey Beardsley (Blue Ridge Summit, Pa./Francis Scott Key (Md.)) found classmate Loren Pruitt (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) at 16:28. Buell and sophomore Abby Baigelman (Larchmont, N.Y./Mamaroneck) would follow with goals to boost the lead to 11-5 with less than 15 minutes to play.

The Red Devils cut the lead to five twice in the remaining time, but Gettysburg's dominance in the draw circle came to light in the final minutes as the Bullets won five consecutive draws to help run down the clock. Senior Katie Blumenthal (Malvern, Pa./Academy of Notre Dame) tossed in a pair of man-up goals inside the final two minutes and Buell capped the scoring with her final tally at 1:02.

Gettysburg won 17 of 24 draw controls in the game. The Bullets also dominated in shots (37-19) and ground balls (25-14).

Buell notched a career high with six points. Markiewicz tacked on two ground balls, three draw controls, and one caused turnover, while Pruitt finished with two goals and one assist. Baigelman posted one goal, one assist, and four ground balls.

Keeler finished with seven saves and four ground balls. Tropsa recorded three ground balls, four draw controls, and one caused turnover and junior Bridget Kenny (Gladstone, N.J./Bernards) logged two ground balls, four draw controls, and two caused turnovers.

Caroline Clancy led Dickinson with two goals and two caused turnovers. Cuddihy posted a game-high eight saves, all in the final period.

Gettysburg returns to action at Swarthmore on Saturday, April 5, at 1:00 p.m.
