No. 12 Bryant Runs by Sacred Heart for 7th Straight Win

FAIRFIELD, Conn. Sacred Heart was held to a season-low five goals Wednesday night in a 14-5 loss to the #11 Bryant Bulldogs at Campus Field.

The Pioneers' five tallies came from five different players. Alex Dodge (Smithtown, N.Y.) had a goal and two assists Wednesday night as Cody Marquis (Londonderry, N.H.) added a goal and an assist. Senior defense Jared Carrier (Crownsville, Md.) had three groundballs and two caused turnovers. Andrew Newbold (Loveland, Ohio) and Mark Macdonald (Billerica, Mass.) also had three groundballs. Ryan Hughes (Bayport, N.Y.) made 14 saves in goal for the second straight game.

Bryant (9-2, 2-0 NEC) scored first at the 10:19 mark of the opening quarter as Colin Dunster fired home a Tucker James assist. Sacred Heart (2-7, 1-1 NEC) tied the game 1-1 with 4:22 to play in the first as Matt Gannon (Huntington, N.Y.) dived right in front of the Bryant goal and scored. Marquis put the Pioneers ahead 2-1 with 33 seconds left in the first, scoring from close range to make the score 2-1.

Sacred Heart's lead did not last long, however. Bryant scored twice in the first three minutes of the second quarter on goals by Dunster and Shane Morrell to take a 3-2 lead. The Bulldogs held the Pioneers scoreless in the quarter, scoring three more times to take a 6-2 halftime lead.

Sacred Heart had 11 shots in the second quarter, but had only two on goal. Bryant led 7-2 before Dodge got Sacred Heart back on the scoreboard at the 3:34 mark of the third quarter. The Bulldogs got back-to-back goals from Shane Morrell and Cody O'Donnell to take a 9-3 lead early in the fourth quarter.

Sacred Heart responded with goals by Alex Miller (Ridgewood, N.J.) and Brian Masi (Smithtown, N.Y.), getting within four, 9-5, with 9:08 to play. However, Bryant scored the last five goals of the game to win 14-5.

Both teams had 38 shots in the game, but Bryant had 28 shots on goal to Sacred Heart's 16. The Bulldogs had 29 groundballs to the Pioneers' 18, and also won 17 of 23 faceoffs. Dunster and Morrell each had four goals for the Bulldogs. Gunnar Waldt made 11 saves.

Sacred Heart goes on the road on Saturday, April 5th to take on Northeast Conference newcomer Hobart at 1:00 p.m.

FAIRFIELD, CONN. Behind a five-goal second quarter and four-score outings from senior midfielder Colin Dunster (Cos Cob, Conn.) and sophomore attack Shane Morrell (Glen Mills, Pa.), No. 12 Bryant won its seventh-straight contest to stay perfect in Northeast Conference action, topping league foe Sacred Heart, 14-5, on the road Wednesday night.

Seven different Bulldogs (9-2, 2-0 NEC) got on the board, with points coming from 10 different sources in the victory, as the visitors scored five in the second quarter and six in the fourth. Four-goal performances from Dunster and Morrell marked game and season highs for both. The Pioneers (2-7, 1-1) were paced by three points from Alex Dodge (1 goal, 2 assists), while Ryan Hughes made 14 stops between the pipes.

Sacred Heart controlled the pace of the game throughout the opening 15 minutes, nullifying Dunster's rocketed early goal and the Bulldogs' 1-0 lead with back-to-back tallies. Matt Gannon scored from the doorstep after fielding a Cody Marquis pass from behind the cage to tie the game at 1-1, and the Pioneers would take the lead with 34 seconds to go in the frame off a Marquis tally, assisted by Dodge.

But when the Pioneers were hit with two concurrent penalties early in the second, the Bulldogs capitalized, netting a man-up goal from Dunster just a minute before Morrell chipped in his first of the night to regain the one-goal edge.
