Robert Morris Upends Wagner

Staten Island, NY Redshirt freshman Patrick McMenamin (Longport, NJ/St. Augustine Prep) and sophomore Griffen LeClaire (White Rock, British Columbia/Toronto, Hill Academy) each finished with three goals and one assist, but it was not enough as Robert Morris held off Wagner by a count of 12-7 in Northeast Conference action today at Hameline Field.

For McMenamin, the hat trick left him one shy of his career high of four goals, which he recorded on March 21 at Richmond, while LeClaire, a member of the 2013 NEC All-Rookie Team, notched a season high with his three scores.

With the loss, the Seahawks fall to 2-7 on the season, 0-2 in the NEC while the Colonials improve to 5-6 overall, 2-3 in league play.

Wagner is next in action on Friday, April 11 when the Seahawks host Hobart at 7:00 pm on Senior Night in the first-ever home lacrosse night game at Hameline Field.

On this sunny, windy afternoon, the Colonials galloped out to a 5-1 lead after one quarter and increased the lead to 7-2 at halftime. After RMU built its biggest lead of the game at 10-3 early in the third quarter, the Seahawks scored four of the next six goals to fashion the final score at 12-7.

Sophomore Paul DeVita (Westfield, NJ/Westfield) added a goal for the Seahawks, who received a sterling 20-save effort in goal by senior Nicholas Gibaldi (Rocky Point, NY/Rocky Point). The 20 saves by Gibaldi are a season high and tie for the second-highest in his career, two behind the 22 shots that he stopped vs. Saint Joseph's on March 2, 2013.

The Colonials were paced by Eric Rankel and Luke Lasziewicz who recorded three goals and one assist apiece. JonPatrik Kealey also finished with four points for RMU, supplying two goals and two asssits, while scoring single goals for the Colonials were Eric Madigan, James Rahe (two assists), and Colin Mawdsley.

Brian Bohn stopped 11 shots in goal for Robert Morris, which held a 43-30 edge in shots and a 29-22 advantage in groundballs. The faceoffs were dead even with each team winning 11 of 22, as freshman Anthony Labetti (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown) continued his final play in the circle, winning 11 of 21 faceoffs.

Robert Morris was 2 of 2 in extra-man opportunities while the Seahawks were 0 of 7 on EMOs. Wagner turned the ball over 18 times while the Colonials committed 10 turnovers.

Staten Island, N.Y. April 5, 2014 Robert Morris earned its eighth straight win over Wagner this afternoon, defeating the Seahawks, 12-7, behind the strength of hat tricks from sophomores Eric Rankel (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown West) and Luke Laszkiewicz (Oshawa, Ontario/Westminster Prep).

Robert Morris (5-6, 2-3 NEC) is now 8-1 against Wagner (2-7, 0-2 NEC) in its history and has scored 10 or more goals in each of those victories.

Rankel's hat trick is the eighth of his career, while Laszkiewicz recorded his seventh in the win.

Freshman JonPatrik Kealey (Ottawa, Ontario/South Carleton) gave the Colonials three players with more than one goal, as he tallied two on the afternoon. Kealey also added two assists.

The victory also featured a pair of firsts. Freshman Colin Mawdsley (Innisfil, Ontario/The Hill Academy) found the back of the net for the first time in his collegiate career, while redshirt senior Eric Madigan (Ashburn, Va./Sacred Heart University) tallied his first goal in a RMU uniform.

The Colonials struck first just 1:10 in as Rankel gathered a pass from redshirt senior Taylor Graves (Carlsbad, Calif./Carlsbad) and ripped a shot from the right of the arc. The Seahawks responded after a turnover to tie it up, but Rankel scored his second of the game minutes later when he gained some space thanks to a pick from sophomore Jacob Ruest (Cornwall, Ontario/The Hill Academy) and rifled one past Nicholas Gibaldi.
