Maritime Loses Skyline Shootout to Sage

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (April 5, 2014) Maritime lost to Skyline Conference opponent Sage on Saturday afternoon at Reinhart Field by the final score of 19-12. The Privateers fall to 2-7 overall on the season (0-4 Skyline), while the Gators improve to 2-6 (1-3 Skyline).

Freshman Jane Quinn (Oakdale, N.Y./Connetquot) tallied a hat trick on the day to bring her season total up to 13 goals. She also had five groundballs, five draw controls and matched the game-high with three caused turnovers.

Four other players recorded two goals each, as junior Charlotte Acklin (Lewes, Del./West Broward), sophomore Savannah Hardwick (Pawling, N.Y./Pawling), freshman Tina Kang (Valley Stream, N.Y./Valley Stream South) and sophomore Leanne Lavelle (New Windsor, N.Y./Washingtonville) all found the back of the net twice. Lavelle led all players in the game with nine groundballs and eight draw controls. Freshman Jillian Raimo (Islip, N.Y./Islip) also found the twine for the Privateers. In goal, sophomore Meghin Paczkowski (Oceanside, N.Y./Oceanside) made five saves, four in the second half, in the losing effort.

The Privateers stormed out to a two goal lead (on tallies by Hardwick and Acklin) just over seven minutes into the game and forced Sage to burn an early timeout. The Gators responded well the quick talk by the coaches and scored two goals to tie the game up. Hardwick scored her second of the game at 17:42 to put Maritime back ahead, but Sage responded with five straight goals to go up, 7-3. Quinn scored two goals under a minute apart to cut the deficit to 7-5, but the Gators scored two of the last three goals of the first half to take a 9-6 lead into the halftime break.

The two teams started the second half trading a goal apiece through the first 10-plus minutes of play before Sage, for the second time in the game, scored five in a row and took a 16-9 lead with 13:50 to play. The Privateers scored three of the next four goals (Raimo, Lavelle's second and Quinn's third), but Sage scored twice more before time ran out.

For the Gators, sophomore Kimberlee Carr recorded a game-high nine goals, while freshman Monica Koralus and grad. student Shirah Fudin both recorded a hat trick with three goals apiece. Sophomore Mallory Hansen scored twice and led Sage with four draw controls. Freshman goalie Jackie St. Pierre made 12 saves to help preserve the victory.

Maritime will return to the field on Thursday night, April 10, with a home Skyline Conference game against St. Joseph's of Long Island. Opening draw is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at Reinhart Field.
