Ballantyne Nets Six as Franklin & Marshall Beats McDaniel

LANCASTER, Pa. It was Will Ballantyne's day as the sophomore tallied six goals on seven shots to lead Franklin & Marshall to a 14-8 victory over McDaniel in Centennial Conference (CC) men's lacrosse action Saturday afternoon at Tylus Field. The Diplomats improved to 8-3, 3-1 CC while the Green Terror dropped to 4-7, 1-3 CC.

F&M never trailed and jumped out to a 6-0 lead early in the second quarter. Ballantyne got things started just a 1:18 into action and Billy Kempner finished off a pass from John Barney to make it 2-0 at 10:49. Chad Gamble found Jamie McCulloch before Ballantyne scored three straight to make it 6-0 at 12:09 in the second.

McDaniel netted its first goal at 11:25 in the second and the Diplomats countered with goals by Tommy Wenk and Chad Gamble to make it 8-1. The Green Terror hung around and put two through in the final 3:15 of the second quarter to make it 8-3 at the break.

Kempner found McCulloch early in the third for a 9-3 F&M lead and Timothy McNichlol's goal for McDaniel made it 9-4 with 6:26 left in the third. Michael Bossidy picked up a pair of goals in the final five minutes of the third with Kempner assisting on the first and Evan Bakst on the second to put F&M up 11-5 at the end of the third.

Ballantyne continued his dominance when he buried a pass from Chad Gamble early in the fourth before McDaniel netted two straight to come within five, 12-7, at 9:27. F&M answered with two of their to make it 14-7 at 5:30. Philip Gamble picked up the first goal and Ballantyne netted the second off a pass from Bakst. McNichol put the last points on the board for the Green Terror with 3:22 left to make it 14-8.

Bossidy and McCulloch finished with two goals while both Gambles and Kempner all finished with one goal each. Chad Gamble and Kempner both finished with a pair of helpers for the Diplomats.

Carlos Pelaez paced the defense with two caused turnovers and a team-high six ground balls, Josh Kanter had two caused turnovers and four ground balls and Connor Melillo finished with three ground balls and two caused turnovers for the Diplomats. Nils Hansen went 8 for 14 from the X.

Cameron Setian improved to 8-3 with six saves while Christian Dallmus took the loss with eight stops.

F&M outshot McDaniel 42-26, went 16 for 18 in clears and caused 22 turnovers.

The Diplomats return to action on Wednesday when F&M travels to Scranton for a 7:00 p.m. match-up.

Sean Brett (Hamilton, N.J./Notre Dame) led the Green Terror (4-7, 1-3 CC) with three goals.

Will Ballantyne paced the Diplomats (8-3, 3-1 CC) with six markers, including four in the opening 6-0 run.

Ballantyne scored 1:18 into the game before Bill Kempner extended the lead to 2-0 fewer than two minutes later.

Jamie McCulloch pushed the lead to 3-0 with 8:15 to play before Ballantyne finished a pair of solo runs to close out a 5-0 first quarter.

Ballantyne then scored 2:51 into the second quarter for a 6-0 advantage.

Sean Brett momentarily broke up the run with an unassisted goal at the 11:25 mark before Tommy Wenk and Chad Gamble pushed the lead to 8-1 with 4:08 on the clock.

Back-to-back tallies from Pat Bivons (Cockeysville, Md./Loyola Blakefield) closed the deficit to 8-3 at the break.

McCulloch started a stretch of alternating goals in the third quarter.
