Manilla Leads No. 16 Bullets Past Swarthmore

GETTYSBURG, Pa. Senior Martin Manilla (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) scored his 100th career goal as part of a six-point day in leading the 16th-ranked Gettysburg lacrosse team past Swarthmore 14-5 at Shirk Field at Musselman Stadium Saturday afternoon.

Gettysburg (7-3, 3-0 CC) ripped off the first three goals in the game with senior Henry Tesar (Lake Bluff, Ill./Avon Old Farms (Conn.)) scooping up a carom and flipping a shot behind his head for the first score at 13:45. Sophomore Jameson Smith (Glen Ridge, N.J./Glen Ridge) made it a 2-0 lead with the first of his three goals off a feed by junior Jimmy Morris (Waccubuc, N.Y./John Jay) at 9:08.

Senior Jon Maddalone (Caroline Beach, N.C./Choate Rosemary Hall (Conn.)) kept Swarthmore (4-6, 1-2 CC) off the board in the opening period with three saves.

After Gettysburg took a 3-0 lead on a score by junior Robby Maddux (Baltimore, Md./St. Paul's) to start the second period, the Garnet turned in two of the next three goals to cut the deficit to 4-2 with 5:07 remaining in the half. Manilla tallied his first goal at 3:25 to set the score at 5-2 at the break.

Gettysburg dialed in to start the second half with four different players lighting the lamp. Smith started the run with a man-up goal at 13:17 and Manilla picked up career goal No. 100 thanks to a feed by Tesar at 10:27. Junior long-pole Owen Rothe (Evanston, Ill./Evanston Township) went the distance after forcing a turnover and picking up the ground ball, whipping the ball into the cage for his first collegiate score at 8:32. A goal by junior Steven Mahon (Setauket, N.Y./St. Anthony's) made it 9-2 with 2:09 left in the third period.

Gettysburg put the game on cruise control in the fourth quarter with another three-goal run pushing the lead to nine (13-4) with five minutes remaining. Manilla finished off his offensive performance by grabbing his own rebound and flipping it into the net at 5:06.

Gettysburg finished with a 35-30 lead in shots and a 39-24 advantage in ground balls. The teams split the 22 face-offs taken in the game.

Manilla became just the 14th Bullet to reach 100 career goals and the first since 2010 graduate Joe Brody. He finished with three goals, three assists, and four ground balls.

Maddux posted two goals and one assist. The junior could join Manilla in the near future in the 100-goal club as he now has 94 scores in his career. Mahon finished with two tallies and Morris dished out a pair of assists.

Maddalone posted nine saves and three ground balls in the cage. Junior Jack Harvazinski (Setauket, N.Y./Ward Melville) logged five ground balls and one caused turnover, while freshman Kyle Hewett (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) finished with five ground balls.

Ian Lukaszewicz led Swarthmore with two goals. Jonathan Cohen made 13 saves in goal.

Gettysburg travels to Dickinson College for its next contest on Wednesday, April 9, at 4:00 p.m.
