Manhattanville Drops Conference Match to Arcadia

PURCHASE, N.Y. Jenna Crothers led a balanced Arcadia attack with four goals and seven assists as the Knights defeated Manhattanville, 23-8, in a Freedom Conference lacrosse match-up on Saturday afternoon at GoValiants.com Field.

Crothers was one of seven Knights to find the net on the afternoon, leading all scorers with her 11 points. Jaclyn Feffer and Dawn Faranetta both scored five times with two assists for seven points each, followed by Erin Misner with three goals and an assist for Arcadia (10-1, 1-0 Freedom).

Junior Meghann Haggerty (Centerport, N.Y./Harborfields) led Manhattanville (1-10, 0-2 Freedom) with three goals for the second straight game. Senior Casandra Honovich (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Walter Panas) had two goals and two assists for four points, in the process moving her into a tie with Liz McNamee '03 for second place in career points at Manhattanville with 264, while classmate Brooke Marcimo (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury) also scored twice.

The Valiants fell behind early against the Knights, with the visitors scoring the first 10 goals of the contest. Sara Volk-Perez opened the scoring 1:39 into the first half, and nine straight draw controls were converted into scores for Arcadia as the visitors took a 10-0 lead 12:49 into the opening frame. Back-to-back scores from Honovich and Haggerty got Manhattanville on the board soon after, but Arcadia scored five of the half's final six goals to take a 15-3 lead into intermission.

Haggerty got the Valiants back within 11 with the first goal of the second half, but Manhattanville got no closer thanks to three straight Arcadia scores that opened up an 18-4 lead with 25:32 remaining. The Valiants outscored the Knights 4-2 over a 10-minute span to make it a 20-8 game with 9:53 left before Arcadia scored the final three goals of the afternoon.

Arcadia finished the game with a 34-19 edge in shots. The tandem of junior Kirsten Shaughnessy (Le Center, Minn./LeSueur-Henderson St. Peter) and sophomore Caitlin Sosa (New York, N.Y./Monroe-Woodbury) combined for seven saves, with Shaughnessy making six stops on 26 shots and Sosa stopping one of the four attempts that came her way. Jordyn Dunacusky made six saves on 14 shots for Arcadia.

Manhattanville will play the first of three straight games on the road on Tuesday, when the Valiants finish off non-conference play with a 5:00 p.m. match-up at St. Joseph's (L.I.).
