Cyclones Rally Past Notre Dame for First Victory

ALLENTOWN, Pa. - Aided by five goals from freshman Abby Voelkner (Denville, N.J./Morris Knolls), Centenary overcame a three-goal, halftime deficit and defeated Notre Dame College (Md.) 20-17 to earn its first lacrosse victory of the season on Saturday afternoon.

Voelkner tallied nine goals and one assist overall, while sophomore Devin Sutko (Cinnaminson, N.J./Cinnaminson) added four goals and one assist and classmate Carlie Schmitt (Stewartstown, N.J./Kennard-Dale) fired in three scores.

The Cyclones trailed 7-1 at the 18:40 mark of the first half, but three consecutive goals from Voelkner brought Centenary within four. Back-to-back scores by Sutko made the score 9-7 and Voelkner added another tally 1:53 before halftime to make the count 11-8.

Voelkner got Centenary within one score by netting a pair of goals during the first two minutes of the second half. Sophomore Kelly Conklin (Monroe Twp., N.J./Monroe Twp.) knotted the score 11-11 and Voelkner gave Centenary its first lead of the day at the 21:19 mark.

The Cyclones scored 10 of the first 11 goals during the second half, leading by as many as six following Conklin's second score with 9:51 to play.

Centenary outshot Notre Dame 41-23 and controlled 23 of 38 draws. Voelkner led the way with 10 draw controls and six ground balls, while sophomore Kristen Rabenstein (Spring Grove, Pa./Spring Grove) recorded six draw controls, five ground balls and four caused turnovers.

Sawyer Butto scored eight times for the Gators and Brittany Peddicord added five goals and one assist.

Saturday's victory marked the first in the head coaching career of Erica Roebuck.

Centenary looks to make it two wins in a row Tuesday when it visits Rosemont at 7:00 pm.
