Nine-Goal Run by Lycoming Sinks Hood

FREDERICK, Md. - A nine-goal run in the second half broke open a close game and led Lycoming to a 13-4 win over Hood in Commonwealth Conference play.

The Warriors jumped ahead 2-0 in the opening nine minutes behind goals from Mike Cooper and Sean Reilly. Sean Murphy (Chesapeake, Va./Grassfield) scored with 3:02 left in the quarter to cut the lead in half heading into the second period.

Two goals by Matt McCaffer stretched Lycoming's (6-5, 4-0) lead to 4-1 before a goal by Brett Humphreys (Newark, Del./Sanford) with just over a minute left made the score 4-2 at the half.

In the second half, the Warriors shut out the Blazers in the third quarter and scored nine times before a pair of late goals by Hood (3-8, 0-3) in the fourth period.

Humphreys picked up his second marker of the afternoon with 2:18 on the clock in the fourth. Patrick O'Brien (Ridley, Pa./Ridley), who assisted on both of the Blazers' first half goals, converted a man up opportunity in the final minute.

O'Brien led Hood with three points in the game. Randolph Clark (Chesapeake Beach, Md./Northern) won 11 of 14 face offs and led all players with seven ground balls. James Weger (Shrewsbury, Pa./Susquehannock) and Jared Bileski (Waterloo, Ontario/Rockway Mennonite Collegiate) each had four ground balls and two caused turnovers.

Joseph McCulloh (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) started in goal and made 14 saves in the opening 49:30. John Hoffman (New Market, Md./Oakdale) made three stops in relief.

McCaffer led all players with four goals, while Cooper scored twice. Cooper led the team with five ground balls and Trevor Williams forced four turnovers.

Alex Wylly made seven saves in the first 57 minutes. Sean Brown tallied five stops in the final three minutes of action.

Hood hosts Stevenson on April 9.

FREDERICK, Md. A two-goal lead at halftime ballooned to 11, as Lycoming scored the first nine goals in the second half to secure its sixth straight win, 13-4, over Hood in Commonwealth Conference action on Saturday afternoon, April 5, at Thomas Athletic Field.

The Warriors (6-5 overall, 4-0 Commonwealth) maintained a perfect conference record and became the first conference team to reach four wins, as Lycoming began to create some separation with the Blazers (3-8 overall, 0-3 Commonwealth) early in the third quarter, with junior Sean Reilly (Corning, N.Y./Corning-Painted Post West) finding junior Steve Troup (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Mendon) for a man-up goal 3:06 into the period.

Sophomore Trevor Williams (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Catholic) followed with an unassisted goal and sophomore Mike Cooper (Riva, Md./Archbishop Spalding) and sophomore Lee Pappas (New Windsor, Md./Glenelg Country School) also scored in the period, giving Lycoming an 8-2 lead.

Lycoming kept the pressure on in the fourth quarter, with freshman Marcus Winn (Selinsgrove, Pa./Selinsgrove Area) scoring his first career goal before sophomore Jake Wanamaker (Waldwick, N.J./Waldwick) put the Warriors in double digits. Senior Matt McCaffer (Marcellus, N.Y./Marcellus) added two goals and Reilly rounded out Lycoming's scoring before Hood scored twice in the final 2:30.

Lycoming got on the board just 2:06 into the game, as Cooper found the back of the net and Reilly gave Lycoming a 2-0 lead midway through the quarter. However, a goal by Hood's Sean Murphy pulled it within one. In the second quarter, McCaffer scored twice before Hood countered with a goal with 1:08 left to make it 4-2 heading into the break.
