Hawks Derailed by Quinnipiac in MAAC Play

WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. - Monmouth freshmen Chris Daly (Wynnewood, Pa./Lower Merion) and Dan Bloodgood (Jackson, N.J./Freehold Township) registered two goals and an assist each, while classmate Eric Berger (Ardsley, Pa./Penn Charter) tallied a pair of goals as well, but the Hawks fell to visiting Quinnipiac 17-9 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon at Monmouth Stadium.

Monmouth, now 0-10 in its first-ever season of men's lacrosse competition, falls to 0-3 in the MAAC, while Quinnipiac, winners of three straight, (5-4) improves to the 3-1 in league play.

Quinnipiac jumped out to a 3-0 lead with 4:29 remaining in the first quarter, before the Hawks trimmed the lead to 3-1 with 1:49 left on Berger's unassisted score. The Bobcats answered with 21 seconds left in the period on Ryan Keenan's second straight tally to lead 4-1 at the end of one.

Monmouth opened the nine-goal second quarter on Daly's unassisted score with 13:04 showing, but QU responded with a pair of Dylan Webster tallies to hold a 6-2 advantage at 11:16. The Hawks answered with two straight scores to climb within 6-4 as Daly netted his second score, off a feed from Bloodgood with 9:19 left, and freshman Kevin Murphy's (Lafayette Hill, Pa./Penn Charter) unassisted goal with 7:00 left.

The Bobcats scored the next three to go ahead 9-4 at 4:35, before Bloodgood's man-up score off a feed from junior Zach Johannes (Sparta, N.J./Pope John XXIII/Franklin & Marshall) made the score 9-5 at the intermission.

QU, which outscored Monmouth 5-1 in the third, opened the quarter with the first three scores, before junior Ryan Schwartz (Corning, N.Y./Corning East/Onondaga CC) netted an unassisted goal with 3:06 left for the Hawks.

Trailing 14-6 heading into the fourth, Bloodgood notched his team-leading 11th goal of the year to get MU within 14-7, while junior Ryan Horsch's (Freehold, N.J./Freehold/Brookdale CC) unassisted tally made the score 16-8 with 8:42 remaining. The Hawks tallied another man-up goal with 2:42 left as Daly found Berger for his second of the day, to account for the 17-9 final.

Monmouth outshot Quinnipiac 45-34 in the contest, forcing QU goalkeeper Gill Conners to make 15 saves in his 55:30 of action, while Colin Nesdale made no saves, while allowing one goal in 4:30 of play. For Monmouth, junior Garrett Conaway (Marriottsville, Md./Liberty/Essex-Howard CC) made his second straight start, stopping three shots in the first half, while freshman Nick Hreshko (Warrington, Pa./La Salle College H.S.) made four saves in the final 30 minutes.

Monmouth returns to action on Saturday, April 12, when the Hawks travel to Manhattan College for a MAAC contest at 7:00 p.m. at Gaelic Park.
