Coker Wins Crucial SAC Game Against Catawba

HARTSVILLE, S.C. Coker picked up a crucial SAC win Saturday (Apr. 5), defeating the Catawba Indians 11-7. The win moves the Cobras to 4-2 in the SAC and into a three-way tie for third place in the conference standings.

In their final home game as Cobras, seniors Andy Campos and Ryan Maurer led Coker's offensive charge. Campos tallied three goals and an assist for four points, while Maurer found the back of the net twice and handed out two helpers for his four points.

Shane Wilson also recorded four points on four goals. Timothy Smith and Mike Martiello each scored one goal apiece for the Navy and Yellow. Martiello also added two assists, while Ryan Vento and Mikey Mazzola each handed out an assist of their own.

In goal, Tim Ryan made 19 saves on 26 shots faced in 60 minutes of action. The duo of Dylan Marks and Patrick Timothee led Coker defensively with three caused turnovers apiece and six and two ground balls, respectively.

The first half was all Coker, as the team took an 8-2 lead into halftime. The Cobras would come out slow in the third period and allow the Indians to net four goals while only scoring two of their own. As the fourth period started with the Navy and Yellow nursing a 10-6 lead, Ryan would shut the door on any comeback attempt by Catawba. The junior goalie only allowed one goal in the fourth and made seven of his game-high 19 saves in the final period. Coker would score one more goal late in the fourth to secure an 11-7 SAC victory.

The Cobras will be back in action next Saturday (Apr. 12) when they travel to Mars Hill University for a must-win South Atlantic Conference game against the Lions. The game is scheduled for a 2:00 p.m. start.

HARTSVILLE, NC -- Coker scored the first seven goals and was able to post an 11-7 win over visiting Catawba in South Atlantic Conference lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon at Byerly Parl Stadium. The Cobras improve to 6-6 overall and 4-2 in the SAC, while the Catawba Indians fall to the same 6-6 and 4-2 mark.

It was all Coker early as the Cobras led 6-0 after a quarter. Coker did the most damage late by putting in five goals over the final six minutes. Catawba would get on the board with a Daniel Rew (Forest Hill, MD/Bel Air HS) goal at the 6:42 mark of the second quarter, but trailed 8-2 at the break.

Catawba mounted a rally in the second half. When Davis Hughes (Windermere, FL/W. Orange HS) scored his second straight goal with 11 minutes left, the Indians were within 10-7. That would be as close as Catawba would get and Coker added a final goal with just over four minutes to play.

The Indians held a 41-31 edge in shots and won 14 of 20 face-offs. Rew was strong in the later category as he won nine of his 11 face-off attempts. Hughes had two goals and an assist for Catawba with Pete Wesselman (Charlotte, NC/Providence HS/Stevenson) making 11 saves.

Coker got a big game from goalie Tim Ryan, who posted 19 saves, including seven in the final quarter. Shane Wilson led the Cobras with four goals. Andy Campos had three goals with an assist, while Ryan Maurer scored two goals with two helpers.

Catawba will host Lenoir-Rhyne in its final conference game of the year next Saturday at 7:00 p.m.
