Privateers Suffer Setback to Mariners

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (April 7, 2014) Maritime dropped its final non-conference game of the 2014 season to the Merchant Marine Mariners by the score of 17-2 at Brooks Stadium through the steady rain on Monday evening.

In the loss, the Privateers got goals from senior midfielder James D'Amico (Floral Park, N.Y./St. Francis Prep.), and also got a tally from sophomore defender Jonathan Strezenec (Merrick, N.Y./Calhoun). For Strezenec, it was the first goal of his career. Freshman Corey Cristallo (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) also picked up an assist.

Sophomore Matt Hayes (Baldwin, N.Y./Baldwin) led the team with seven ground balls, as the sophomore went 10 for 21 on faceoffs in the contest. In goal, sophomore Mike Arnold (Plainedge, N.Y./Plainedge) stopped 10 shots in just over three quarters of play. Freshman Kieran Clark (Rockville Centre, N.Y./South Side) stopped a pair of shots in the remainder of the game.

Merchant Marine got off to a 4-0 lead through the first 15 minutes of play, a lead that was cut in half during the early stages of the second period. With 9:43 left in the half, D'Amico picked up his sixth goal of the season off a pass from Cristallo. Three minutes later, Strezenec netted the first goal of his career to trim the deficit to two.

The Mariners picked up four more goals in the half to take an 8-2 advantage. A run that was continued into the second half. Merchant Marine added nine more goals in the second half and ran away with the 17-2 victory.

Final stats saw Merchant Marine outshoot Maritime by a 50-31 clip, while turnovers, ground balls and faceoffs were relatively close between the two sides throughout the contest.

Maritime (4-9, 0-3 Skyline) will look to rebound on Wednesday night, when they take on Mount St. Mary at 7:00 p.m. from Reinhart Field. Merchant Marine (6-4, 1-2 Landmark) will take on Scranton in northeast Pennsylvania at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday afternoon.
