Cyr Nets Five Goals as No. 8 Penn State Defeats Cornell

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. Cornell battled No. 8 Penn State but ultimately fell to the Nittany Lions Tuesday night, 13-8. Lindsay Toppe led the Big Red (5-6, 2-2 Ivy) with three goals and one assist.

Penn State's Ally Heavens got the Nittany Lions on the board first, scoring five minutes into the first half from a pass by Tatum Coffey. Mackenzie Cyr added a tally three minutes later to give Penn State a 2-0 lead.

Shelby McNeilly posted the first Big Red goal 2:04 later, finishing a pass from Catherine Ellis. Lindsay Toppe helped on an Amie Dickson goal to give Cornell the equalizer at 18:25.

Cyr put Penn State ahead at 14:07, but Toppe and Emily Tripodi scored a pair of goals 2:27 apart to give Cornell a 4-3 lead with 11:01 remaining in the first half.

Heavens scored her second of the game at 8:17 to tie the game for the third time. The tie didn't last long and 16 seconds later, Madison Cyr capitalized on a pass from Jess Loizeaux to put Penn State up 5-4.

Madison Cyr scored again, this time unassisted. At 5:02, Toppe scored off an assist from Rachel Moody.

The Nittany Lions then had three goals in 23 seconds. Coffey tallied one, and Madison Cyr added two more. With eight seconds remaining in the half, Toppe finished a pass from Emily Tripodi to go into halftime down, 9-6. Penn State outshot Cornell 19-11, and Big Red goaltender Renee Poullott had six saves in the first half.

Moody opened up scoring for the Big Red in the second half, burying a pass from Amanda D'Amico at 27:27 to cut the deficit to 9-7. After Penn State's Lauren Purvis picked up a yellow card, Tripodi found the back of the net to get her second goal of the game and bring Cornell within one with 24:44 left to play.

Abby Smucker ended the Big Red's 3-0 run when she finished a pass from Coffey to extend the Nittany Lions' lead to 10-8. Smucker scored again 12 seconds later, this time off a pass from Mackenzie Cyr. Coffey slipped one past Cornell goaltender Poullott to give Penn State an 11-8 lead with 12:53 left to play. With 5:06 left, Madison Cyr scored her fifth and final goal of the game and give Penn State the 13-8 final advantage.

Lindsay Toppe led the Big Red on offense with three goals and one assist. Emily Tripodi chipped in two goals and one assist, while Rachel Moody, Amie Dickson and Shelby McNeilly all added one goal each. Renee Poullott ended the day with seven total saves.

Madison Cyr led the Nittany Lions with five goals, while Tatum Coffey had two goals and three assists. Goalkeeper Emi Smith had five saves on the day.

The Big Red will travel to Providence, R.I. Saturday to take on Brown at 1:00 p.m.
