Saint Anselm Holds off Saint Michael's for One-Goal Win

MANCHESTER, N.H. Junior Geoff Kennedy (Gloucester, Mass.) and senior Ryan Mee (Medway, Mass.) each tallied three points as Saint Anselm took down Saint Michael's, 9-8, Tuesday evening for Northeast-10 Conference men's lacrosse action at Grappone Stadium.

Mee recorded three goals, while Kennedy added a pair of goals and an assist. Seniors Jake Mallinson (Middletown, R.I.) and Andrew Messner (Wakefield, R.I.) added two points apiece, each with a goal and an assist.

Saint Anselm grabs its second straight contest and improves to 4-6 overall with a 3-4 mark in conference play, while the Purple Knights drop to 3-7, 3-4 NE-10.

After three minutes of play, the Hawks took a 2-1 lead after trailing 1-0 to start the game. Mallinson and Kennedy both found the net to open scoring for Saint Anselm. Saint Michael's leveled the game at 2-2, but junior Andy Budz (Williamstown, Mass.) found Mee to give the Hawks a 3-2 edge after the first quarter.

Mallinson set up junior James Peters (Medway, Mass.) to open scoring in the second frame and allowed the Hawks to double up on the Purple Knights, 4-2. Saint Michael's knotted things up once more and took the lead, however, by 2:16 with a trio of goals, one of them occurring with the extra-man advantage. It would be Saint Anselm's turn to tie the game next, as Mee evened things up at 5-5 to head into the break.

Over five minutes into the third quarter, senior Sam MacDonald (Hopkinton, Mass.) broke the tie to give the Hawks a 6-5 edge, but the Purple Knights once again had the answer, keeping the score locked, 6-6. Mee put Saint Anselm up 7-6, but Saint Michael's turned the tables and took an 8-7 lead 1:08 into the fourth. Messner and Kennedy teamed up for a huge pair of goals to seal the deal for the Hawks at the close of the fourth. Messner found Kennedy at 6:25, before Messner returned the favor at 4:06 to give Saint Anselm the 9-8 win.

Sophomore goalie James O'Neill (East Walpole, Mass.) made a huge save with 30 seconds left in the game to help the Hawks to victory. O'Neill made eight saves for Saint Anselm, who held a 52-32 advantage in shots. T.J. Bicknell made 20 stops for the Purple Knights.

Senior Matthew Steele (Ipswich, Mass.) was 12 for 21 on the faceoff and picked up 10 groundballs, while MacDonald notched six and sophomore Jake Stokes (Beverly, Mass.) grabbed four.

The Hawks return to action Saturday, April 12 at 3:00 p.m. when the Hawks travel to American International.

MANCHESTER, N.H. - In a game during which neither team ever led by more than two goals, Saint Michael's fell to Saint Anselm, 9-8, on Tuesday at Grappone Stadium. The Purple Knights moved to 3-7 overall and 3-4 in the Northeast-10 Conference, while the Hawks are 4-6 and 3-4.

Junior Matt Dromeshauser (Norwell, Mass./Norwell) netted his first career hat trick after entering the game with five career goals, and first-year Tom Fitzgerald (Cranford, N.J./Cranford) had two goals and an assist. Senior Connor Glackin (Mission Viejo, Calif./Saint Anthony's) and first-years Galen Antolino (Exeter, N.H./Exeter) and Taylor Wallace (Bedford, N.H./Bedford) all scored once, with Wallace's his first as a collegian, and senior Evan Antolino (Exeter, N.H./Exeter) dished off three assists.

Sophomore T.J. Bicknell (Duxbury, Mass./Duxbury) made a career-high 20 saves, the most by a Purple Knight since Zach Jandl '10 had 23 on April 2, 2010. Senior Cooper Quenneville (Shoreham, Vt./Gould Academy) was 5 for 10 on face-offs with seven ground balls, a caused turnover and an assist, and classmate Chris Casserly (Kensington, N.H./Exeter) won four draws and had four ground balls.
