Golden Eagles Fly Past the Valiants

PATCHOGUE, N.Y. Eleven players found the net for host St. Joseph's (L.I.), and the Golden Eagles posted a 19-5 victory over Manhattanville on Tuesday afternoon at Danzi Stadium.

Saint Joseph's (10-3) was led by Heather Ferchland and Ela Igdeler with four goals apiece, along with Caitlynn Webber with four points on two goals and two assists.

Junior Saba Naji (Lewiston, Maine/Lewiston) had two goals to lead Manhattanville (1-11), followed by single tallies from senior co-captains Casandra Honovich (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Walter Panas) and Brooke Marcimo (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury) as well as junior Meghann Haggerty (Centerport, N.Y./Harborfields).

Marcimo opened the scoring for Manhattanville 98 seconds into the game to give the Valiants an early lead, and a Haggerty tally a few minutes later made it a 2-2 score six minutes into the contest. However, the Golden Eagles went on a 12-1 run to end the opening half, including all four goals from Ferchland, to put the home team up 14-3 at the half.

Saint Joseph's held a 24-7 edge in shots at the half, forcing junior Kirsten Shaughnessy (Le Center, Minn./LeSueur-Henderson St. Peter) to make eight saves over the opening 30 minutes of play.

The game's pace slowed considerably in the second half, as the Valiants were unable to mount a comeback. The two teams combined for only seven goals over the final 30 minutes, with Honovich and Naji finding the net for the visitors.

Shaughnessy made five more saves in the second half, finishing the game with 13 stops. Courtney Wickline made eight saves for Saint Joseph's in picking up the win.

The Valiants will close the regular season with four straight Freedom Conference match-ups, beginning on Saturday when Manhattanville travels to King's (Pa.) for a 1:00 p.m. start.
