No. 12 Queens Starts Fast, Defeats Catawba

SALISBURY, SC -- Queens, ranked 12th, used a fast start to post a 12-4 win over host Catawba in South Atlantic Conference lacrosse action on Wednesday afternoon at Shuford Stadium. The Royals improve to 10-4 overall and 5-0 in the SAC, while the Indians fall to 7-7 and 3-2.

Queens jumped out to a 5-0 lead after just five minutes. Jena Ready (Charlotte, NC) and Brittany Larranaga (Orlando, FL) each scored twice in the early barrage. Abigail Paulus (Pickerington, OH) added the last of the five goals at the 25:19 mark.

Ready added her third goal with 21:13 left in the half, but Catawba settled down after that. Bethany Davis (Salisbury, MD/Parkside HS) made some key saves to keep the Royals off the board for nearly the remainder of the half. She finished with 15 saves for the game.

Catawba trailed 7-0 at the break before Ebony Mills (Harrison, ME/Oxford Hills HS/Mount Ida) and Alyssa Corace (Mahopac, NY/Mahopac HS) started the second half with goals for the Lady Indians. Mills would add a second to make it 9-4 Queens with 17:39 to go. The Royals scored the last three goals for the final margin.

Ready led the way for Queens with four goals. Larranaga tallied three with Kelly Dowd (Stony Point, NY) and Nicole Forgione (Davidson, NC) each scoring twice. Paulus had a goal and an assist. Three Queens goalies saw action. Danielle Horoschak (Jarrettsville, MD) went the first half and had two saves. Christine Wiese (Chesapeake Beach, MD) had three saves in her 24 and half minutes and Jordan Borrosh (Portsmouth, RI) finished up the game with three saves.

Mills led Catawba with her two goals. Corace and Meredith Jones (Barnesville, MD/St. John's Catholic HS) had the other goals.

The Lady Indians will play their final home game of the season on Saturday, hosting Lenoir-Rhyne at 4:00 p.m.

SALISBURY, N.C. Queens scored five goals in the first five minutes of play to help them defeat SAC opponent Catawba in lacrosse action. The Royals, ranked 12th in the nation, improve to 5-0 in the league and 10-4 on the season with the win. The Indians drop to 7-7 on the year and 3-2 in the SAC.

Jena Ready led the Royals with four goals, while Brittany Larranaga added a hat trick. Kelly Dowd chipped in with two goals and one assist, while Nicole Forgione added two goals. Abigail Paulus also notched two points with one goal and an assist. Brittany Barnwell led the Royals in draw controls with four, while also tallying two ground balls and two caused turnovers.

After getting off to a 5-0 start in the opening five minutes of action on the backs of Ready and Larranaga who each notched two goals, the Royals were able to shut the Indians out and head into the locker room at the half with a 7-0 advantage.

Catawba would get on the board 2:55 into the second with a goal from Ebony Mills making the score 7-1. Teammate Alyssa Corace followed putting a ball in the net at 24:37 to cut Queens' lead to five.

Queens would answer with two quick goals before the 20 minute mark to extend their lead back out to seven.

Following another two goal push from the Indians, Queens scored three consecutive goals while also holding the Indians scoreless in the final 17 minutes of play.

The Royals outshot Catawba 41-17 and won the ground ball battle, 25-20. Danielle Horoschak took the win in goal after totaling two saves in the first half. Jordan Borrosh and Christine Wiese saw time in the second half totaling a combined six saves.

Mills led the Indians with two goals on the day. Bethany Davis took the loss in the net after getting 15 stops.

Queens is on the road at Brevard Saturday at noon to wrap up the regular season.
