Rutgers Doubles up Marquette in Game with 8 Yellow Cards

PISCATAWAY, N.J. (April 11, 2014) Rutgers (7-6, 1-2 Big East) recorded its first Big East Conference win, as the squad defeated the visiting Marquette Golden Eagles (5-7, 1-2 Big East) by a score of 12-6 Friday evening at the RU Turf Field. For the second-straight game, redshirt sophomore midfielder Kristin Kocher (Medford, N.J.) led Rutgers in scoring with a hat trick.

The Scarlet Knights jumped out to an earlier 2-0 lead, and preserved the lead to head into the halftime break in front, 6-3. Rutgers came out of the intermission firing on all cylinders, netting four-straight scores to take a commanding 10-3 advantage. Marquette proceeded to net back-to-back scores to get within five, but the Rutgers' defense allowed just one Golden Eagle goal in the final eight minutes of play to secure the win.

Kocher recorded a team-high five points (4G, 1A) to lead Rutgers, who had seven total players find the back of the net in the win. Senior attacker Megan Clements (Pennington, N.J.) and redshirt junior midfielder Lauren Sbrilli (Martinsville, N.J.) each finished with two goals.

Additionally, sophomore attacker Halley Barnes (Garnet Valley, Pa.) and freshman attacker Amanda Turturro (Farmingdale, N.Y.) both finished with two points apiece, tallying a goal and an assist in the win.

Also scoring for Rutgers was sophomore midfielder Chrissy Schreiber (East Meadow, N.Y.) and rookie midfielder Rachel Engler (Perkiomenville, Pa.). Junior attacker Melissa Arthur (Marlton, N.J.), first-year midfielder Kristina Dunphey (Hillsborough, N.J.) and junior midfielder Jenny Vlahos (Manhasset, N.Y.) all recorded a point each, assisting on a goal.

Marquette was led by Hayley Baas and Kenzie Brown, who each finished with two goals.

Rutgers, who opened the contest with a 2-0 lead after goals back-to-back goals from Kocher and Schreiber at 27:12 and 25:50, respectively, faced pressure from the Golden Eagles early on, as the visitors cut RU's advantage to a single score in the 23rd minute.

After Kocher regained a two-point cushion for the hosts at 18:55, again Marquette got within one following an unassisted score by Brown (12:56). Rutgers ripped off two goals from Kocher and Sbrilli over the next four minutes, until a man-up goal for Marquette again made it a two-score game with 6:40 remaining in the opening frame.

That would be the closest the visitors got for the remainder of the contest, however, as Kocher dished to Turturro at 6:12 to account for the final score of the first half. RU proceeded to out-score the visitors by an identical 6-3 margin in the second stanza. Clements accounted for a third of the Scarlet Knights' goals in the second half, as the senior scored at the 25:23 mark, as well as at 17:29.

Rutgers is back in action on Sunday, April 13, as it welcomes Georgetown to High Point Solutions Stadium at 1:00 p.m.

PISCATAWAY, N.J. Marquette dropped a 12-6 decision at Rutgers on Friday evening at RU Turf Field in a game which featured eight yellow cards.

Sophomore midfielders Kenzie Brown and Hayley Baas each notched a pair of goals for the Golden Eagles (5-7, 1-2 Big East), while Amanda Bochniak and Katie Bathon added the other MU markers.

Redshirt sophomore Kristin Kocher scored four goals for the Scarlet Knights (7-6, 1-2 Big East), who also received two goals apiece from Lauren Sbrilli and Megan Clements.

Marquette was able to corral 14 of 20 draw controls on the evening, while Rutgers held slim 19-18 and 11-9 advantages in shots and ground balls, respectively.
