Liberty Falls to Big South Leader High Point

LYNCHBURG, Va. Playing at home for the first time in over a month, Liberty challenged Big South Conference front-runner High Point on Friday afternoon at Liberty Lacrosse Field. The Lady Flames jumped to an early lead but couldn't hold off the conference's highest scoring offense, falling to the Panthers, 17-5.

The loss drops the Lady Flames to 2-11 overall and 1-2 in Big South action. High Point remains unbeaten in league play, at 3-0, and ups its season record to 7-5.

The Panthers jumped out to a 1-0 advantage, before Liberty's Morgan Becker tied the game with the first of her two goals on the day with 2:01 elapsed in the opening half.

After Christie Dougherty put High Point back in front by one with a goal at 26:31, the Lady Flames answered with a pair of markers to take a 3-2 lead with 19:00 showing on the game clock. Alyssa Kidder notched her first goal of the game off of an assist from Michaela Rich and was followed by Kallie Britton's 12th score of the season.

High Point used a four-goal run to gain a 6-3 edge with just over eight minutes remaining until halftime.

Becker halted the Panthers' surge with her second goal of the game and 19th overall for the season at the 7:20 mark, pulling the Lady Flames with two, at 6-4.

The Panthers' closed the half with four more markers to take a 10-4 lead in the intermission.

High Point carried its momentum into the second half, scoring the first six goals of the frame to break the contest open.

Kidder capped her second two-goal game of the season, tallying Liberty's fifth score of the match with just under five minutes remaining in regulation.

One more goal by the Panthers in the last minute of play made the final score 17-5 in favor of the visitors.

The final statistical tallies saw High Point hold the edge in shots, 31-16, ground balls, 21-18, and draw controls, 16-7. Both teams finished the contest with eight caused turnovers.

The Lady Flames' Jen Moyer tallied career highs with five ground balls and five caused turnovers. The Panthers' Kendyl Gardner notched a game-high four goals, while her teammate, Mackenzie Carroll, posted three assists to lead both squads.

In goal, Liberty's Kristen Masullo snagged 12 saves. High Point's Julia Burns earned the win after notching two first half saves, while Hayley Peets collected five saves in the cage during the second stanza.

The Lady Flames remain at home for their next contest, hosting Big South rival Coastal Carolina on Sunday at noon.
