Susquehanna Scores First Four, Cruises by Presidents

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Susquehanna scored the first four goals of the game and never looked back in defeating Washington & Jefferson 12-4 on men's lacrosse Senior Day Saturday at Alexandre Stadium.

The Crusaders (7-7, 3-1) opened the scoring midway through the first quarter on the first of three goals scored by Austin Lein. Susquehanna scored three times in a little over three minutes later in the period before John Bursch netted the first W&J goal 17 seconds prior to the quarter ending.

Adam Fox netted the lone goal of the second quarter at the 11:50 mark and SU took a 5-1 lead into halftime.

The teams traded goals in the third quarter, but the Crusaders put the game away with three goals in the first eight minutes of the second half.

Lein added two assists for a five-point game, while Fox also scored three times. Three Crusader goalies combined to make 12 saves. Susquehanna out-shot W&J (5-9, 0-5) by a 39-25 margin and scored on 2 of 4 extra-man chances.

Kyle Heinig scored two goals to lead W&J, while Bursch (1g, 1a) and Bryan Whipkey also scored. Conor Crowe (9 saves) and Jacob Succop (5) split time in the goal. Chase Bennett led the Presidents with seven ground balls.

W&J plays its final regular-season home game of the spring Thursday versus Saint Vincent (7:00 pm).

WASHINGTON, Pa. Susquehanna held Landmark Conference opponent Washington and Jefferson to a mere four goals as the Crusaders came away with a 12-4 victory on Saturday afternoon.

The four goals allowed matched a season low and SU (7-7, 3-1) has now won four of its last six games.

Three different goalies saw playing time with Jared Knowlton (North Salem, N.Y./Kent School) playing the first 30 minutes and Jonathan Berg (Chester, N.J./Mendham) playing all but the final 45 seconds of the second half. Knowlton had seven saves and gave up just one goal while Berg had four stops.

The Crusaders, who have struggled in the face-off department this season, won 12 of 20 faceoffs and scored on 2 of 4 man-up opportunities. Adam Fox (Brookfield, Conn./Brookfield) and Austen Lein (New Vernon, N.J./Madison) each netted three goals with Lein also chipping in two assists. Pat Brogan (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) finished with two goals and two assists and Carmen Raroha (Voorhees, N.J./Bishop Eustace) added two goals.

SU out-scored the Presidents (5-9, 0-5) 4-1in the opening half with two of those four goals coming from Lein. Washington & Jefferson did score with 17 seconds left in the half for its first goal of the afternoon.

Fox accounted for the lone second-quarter goal and the Crusaders went into halftime holding on to a 5-1 advantage.

The teams traded goals in the second half with each team finding the back of the net twice. Fox and Greg Budd (Kinnelon, N.J./Kinnelon) netted back-to-back goals to make it 7-2 and the quarter ended with Susquehanna still in the lead, 7-3.

The Crusaders accounted for five of the six fourth-quarter goals, including the first three of the period, all from different players. Alec Ramos (Maplewood, N.J./Columbia) capped off the game's scoring with a man-up goal at the 45-second mark to make it 12-4.

SU returns home to host Scranton on April 17 at 6:00 p.m. for Senior Night.
