Cortland Bashes Buffalo St. in Stick It to Cancer Game

CORTLAND, N.Y. Ten players scored at least one goal as the second-ranked Cortland lacrosse team defeated Buffalo St., 18-4, in SUNYAC action Saturday afternoon at the Stadium Complex. The game was Cortland's annual Stick it to Cancer game, in which funds are raised and donated for cancer research.

Freshman Kristen Ohberg (Brewster) led the Red Dragons (12-0, 5-0 SUNYAC) with three goals and one assist. Senior Taylor Reh (Miller Place) and sophomore Tara Monaghan (Stony Point/North Rockland) each had two goals and one assist and seniors Taylor Robinson (Manlius/Fayetteville-Manlius) and Liz Beville (Jamesville/Jamesville-DeWitt) and sophomores Elise Bennett (Webster/Webster Thomas) and Ashley Gentile (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) scored two goals apiece.

Sophomore Erica Geremia (Camillus/West Genesee) tallied a game-high five points for the Red Dragons on one goal and four assists. Juniors Emma Hayes-Hurley (Huntington) and Marilyn Farrell (Fayetteville/Fayetteville- Manlius) each recorded one goal and one assist, while three others contributed one assist, including freshman Kaitlin Antelmi (Bridgeport/Chittenango) who registered the first point of her career.

Sophomore goalie Liz Ingalls (Centerport/St. Anthony's) played the first half in the cage, making four saves before giving way to freshman Jaclyn Beshlian (Wantagh), who stopped three shots in the second half. Hayes-Hurley won six draw controls, Reh collected four ground balls and Ohberg, Geremia and senior Jessica Lavelle (Fayetteville/Fayetteville-Manlius) each recorded two caused turnovers as Cortland registered 15 in the game.

Senior Becca Martinez (Syracuse/Corcoran) paced the Bengals (7-5, 2-3 SUNYAC) with a pair of goals. Junior Meghan Farrell (Endicott/Union-Endicott) added one goal and one assist and junior Alexis Wilensky (Syracuse/Corcoran) tallied one goal. Junior goalie Colleen George (Johnson City/Maine-Endwell) made 11 saves. Four different players collected three ground balls each, and Farrell caused a game-high three turnovers.

The Red Dragons wasted little time in building a quick 4-0 lead. Reh sandwiched a pair of goals around scores by Farrell and Hayes-Hurley to make it a 4-0 game just six minutes into the contest. After Wilensky scored at 19:50, Cortland ran off eight straight goals, two each coming from Beville and Ohberg, for a commanding 12-1 lead with 7:25 left in the first half. Martinez ended the streak with her first of the game at 3:50 before Gentile closed the first-half scoring with her second of the game at the 1:03 mark.

Ohberg and Monaghan netted goals at 27:25 and 22:30 to open scoring in the second half to make it a 14-2 game. Farrell scored at 20:10 for the Bengals, followed by Robinson's second score for Cortland at 18:05. After Martinez netted her second at 16:00, Bennett finished off the scoring with back-to-back goals for the 18-4 final.
