No. 12 Ithaca Rallies to Edge Nazareth

ITHACA, N.Y. -- Ithaca outscored Nazareth 5-3 in the second half Saturday to break loose from a 5-5 halftime tie and the Bombers went on to defeat the Golden flyers, 10-8, in an Empire 8 Conference lacrosse game.

Ithaca, ranked 12th nationally in Division III, improved to 10-3 overall and 4-0 in conference games. Nazareth had a 13-game conference winning streak snapped with the loss and now stands at 6-7 overall and 4-1 in the Empire 8. The Golden Flyers are home Tuesday to host Cortland in a non-conference game at 4:00 p.m.

Nazareth led 3-1 early in the first quarter before Ithaca rallied to take leads of 4-3 and 5-4 in the second quarter. Senior Brian Wright scored for Nazareth with 3:10 left in the first half to make the score 5-5 heading into halftime.

Ithaca's Jake Long scored three goals, including the go-ahead goal just 45 seconds into the third quarter to give the Bombers a 6-5 lead. The Bombers never trailed after that as they scored four times in the third to carry a 9-7 advantage into the final 15 minutes. Joe Perkins scored for Ithaca early in the period to make it 10-7 and Nazareth's Hunter Burdick answered with an unassisted score with 6:00 left, but that closed out the scoring.

Nazareth had seven more shorts after Burdick's goal, but the only two that were on goal were saved by Ithaca goalie Scott Sidnam, who finished with nine saves overall.

The Golden Flyers got first-quarter goals Wright, Kyle Fanning and Will Fallo to take a 3-1 lead before Ithaca rallied. Burdick and Wright scored in the second quarter and Collin Clark and Drew Simoneau scored in the third. Nazareth played its fourth game in a row without sophomore attackman Luke Wooters (21g, 23a), who has an ankle injury. In addition, Ithaca was able to hold sophomore Troy Haefele (27g, 17a) without a point for the first time this season.

Nazareth outshot Ithaca 37-36, while Ithaca had a 34-31 edge in ground balls. Simoneau won 13 of 21 face-offs and collected nine ground balls. Scott Brown had 10 saves in goal for Nazareth.
