Cavey Lifts Shepherd Past Notre Dame in OT Win

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. Senior midfielder Jenny Cavey (Sykesville, Md./Westminster) scored on an assist from junior attacker Georgia Karr (Eldersburg, Md./Liberty) with 2:06 left in overtime to lift Shepherd to a 19-18 win over Notre Dame in lacrosse action at Ram Stadium on Saturday.

Senior midfielder Christina Ferrara (California, Md./Leonardtown) led the Rams with six goals and an assist. Karr added three goals and a game-high four assists.

Sophomore attacker Hunter Morris (Severna Park, Md./Severn) and junior attacker/midfielder Kelsey Eagan (Baltimore, Md./Sparrows Point) each had three goals, while Cavey added a pair.

Sophomore midfielder Erin Phelan (Thurmont, Md./Catoctin) added a goal and an assist, while freshman attacker Brooke Hunley (Monrovia, Md./Linganore) notched a goal.

The Rams got a fine all-around effort from junior defender Alyx Albano (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills). Albano had 10 ground balls, seven draw controls, and seven caused turnovers.

Kristen Hull had six goals and an assist, while Madalyn Dewling added four goals and a pair of assists to pace the Falcons. Kelly Matthewman contributed four goals.

Notre Dame opened the game on a 4-0 run and took a 9-8 lead into the break.

Trailing 16-13 late in regulation, Shepherd responded with four consecutive goals capped by an unassisted tally by Ferrara with 44 seconds left to give the Rams a 17-16 lead.

The Falcons forced overtime as Matthewman scored with 36 seconds left in regulation. Brooke Czarnecki appeared to have scored the game-winner on a last-second tally, but officials ruled it came after the horn.

Junior netminder Lily Schmulowitz (Baltimore, Md./Catonsville) recorded six saves for the Rams, while Lauren Ragsdale had 15 saves for the Falcons.

Shepherd had a 40-27 advantage in shots and a 21-20 edge in draw controls. The Rams had a 37-29 edge in ground balls.

Shepherd improves to 8-5, while Notre Dame falls to 4-6. The Rams return to action on Thursday when they travel to Shorter for a 6:00 p.m. contest.
