Brown Downed by Cornell in Overtime

PROVIDENCE, R.I. Lindsay Toppe's free position goal with 17 seconds to play in the first overtime propelled Cornell to an 11-10 victory over Brown on Saturday at Stevenson Field. With the loss, the Bears fall to 9-4 and 2-3 overall in the Ivy League standings while Cornell improves to 6-6 (3-2 Ivy).

Big Red goaltender, Carly Gniewek (1-1), shined on Saturday as she made 11 saves, including eight in the second half to prevent Brown from opening up a bigger cushion. Kellie Roddy (Poway, Calif.) made five saves to drop to 9-4 this season.

With things looking dire for Brown in the final minute of regulation, a turnover from Cornell's Brittany Marriott gave the Bears hope coming off a timeout with 1:21 to play. Bre Hudgins' (Syracuse, N.Y.) drive to the fan paid dividends as she drew a free position attempt with 25 seconds to play, ultimately converting to knot the game at 10. After controlling the draw in overtime, Gniewek denied Lauren Toy (Kentfield, Calif.) point-blank, as the teams entered the second half of overtime still tied. The Big Red controlled the draw and converted on a free position attempt with 17 seconds left as Toppe was fouled off the ball.

Freshman Kerianne Hunt (Alamo, Calif.) recorded her first career hat trick as the Bears jumped out to a 6-2 lead midway through the first half. Goals from Amanda D'Amico and Shelby McNeilly brought Cornell within two. Toppe's first tally of the afternoon, after being shadowed by Meghan O'Brien (Bethesda, Md.) all day, brought the Big Red within one at 7-6 entering halftime.

D'Amico's marker gave Cornell its first lead of the game at 8-7 with 20 minutes to play. Quick strikes from Danielle Mastro (Endicott, N.Y.) and Hudgins 50 seconds apart put Brown back on top at 9-8. Toppe and Catherine Ellis responded to give Cornell a 10-9 lead they held for nearly eight minutes before Hudgins equalizer sent the game into overtime.

On Senior Day, the Bears' seniors elevated their play, as Mastro led the team with two goals and two assists, while Hudgins and Grace Healy (Bellport, N.Y.) each struck twice. Co-captain Erin Roos backstopped the Brown defense with four crucial caused turnovers. Abby Bunting (Wellesley, Mass.) and Toy each recorded goals for Brown on Saturday.

The Bears conclude their regular season schedule with back-to-back Ivy road tilts at Penn (4/19) and Yale (4/26).
