No. 11 W&L Wins Slugfest with Guilford

LEXINGTON, Va. Washington and Lee scored a season high 19 goals en route to defeating the Guilford Quakers, 19-13, on Saturday afternoon at Watt Field on senior day.

The Generals' previous high was 16 goals, which they recorded in the 16-6 win over St. Mary's on February 19.

The first half proved to be close, featuring one lead change and four ties. With the game tied at 7-7 with 8:06 left on the clock, W&L (11-2, 7-0) recorded three unassisted goals from three different first-years to close the period with a 10-7 advantage.

The Generals picked up right where they left off with two consecutive goals to start the second period to increase their lead to 12-7 with 26:19 left to play.

Guilford (9-4, 7-1) would answer, going on a quick 3-1 run, led by two goals from senior attacker Lily Colley (Wells, Maine/Wells) to pull within three goals (13-10) by the 16:08 mark.

W&L responded with a 6-3 spurt over the final 15:58 to secure the 19-13 win. The Generals have won 88 straight at home against ODAC opponents.

For the game, the Generals held an 18-16 edge in draw controls and a 29-22 advantage in shots. W&L was also 13 of 16 on clear attempts, while GC finished the game 10 of 12.

Junior keeper Cara Mulligan (Glen Ridge, N.J./Glen Ridge) spent 57:44 in goal for the Generals, finishing the game with eight saves. Senior Kingsley Schroeder (Dayton, Ohio/Westminster School/Miami Valley) played the final 2:16 for the Blue and White. First-year Sammi Milbourn (Lake Zurich, Ill./Lake Zurich) suffered the loss and finished the game with eight saves.

Senior attackers Greta Witter (Houston, Texas/The Hill School) and Margaret Klein (North Andover, Mass./Brooks) led the Generals' offense with seven points apiece. Klein registered four goals and three assists, while Witter tallied three goals and dished out four assists.

First-year attacker Melissa Coggins (St. John's, Fla./Bartram Trail) recorded two goals and three assists to total five points, while first-year midfielder Olivia Sisson Great Falls, Va./Langley), senior midfielder Meade Brewster (Brookside, N.J./West Morris Mendham) and sophomore attacker Carly Taglienti (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) each tallied two goals. Senior defender Leanne Stone (Darien, Conn./Dairen) paced the back line with six ground balls and five caused turnovers.

Colley anchored Guilford's offense with three goals and five assists, while junior midfielder Eleanora Keene (Wittman, Md./Gunston Day School) recorded four goals to go along with her team-high four draw controls. Senior attacker E'leyna Garcia (Plantation, Fla./Pine Crest Prep) finished the game with two goals, one ground ball, three draw controls and three caused turnovers.

The Generals will be back in action on Tuesday when they host Sweet Briar for a 5:00 pm contest.
