Shorter Defeats Young Harris

ROME--Shorter topped Young Harris Saturday afternoon, 15-5, bringing their season record to 6-7.

Hawks took the lead with the lone goal of the first quarter as James VandenBrink netted a pass from Matt Kristiansen, to make it a 1-0, game.

The second frame opened as Kyle Morris scored his first goal of the game for Shorter. The Mountain Lions tied the game on back to back goals by Zachary Laird and Matt Spadafora, but the Hawks answered; ending the period on a 5-0 run, to take a 7-2 lead into the break. Kyle VanKauwenberg (2), Tyler Schott, Andrew King, and Morris each netted goals for Shorter during the run.

In the third quarter, the Hawks added four more goals, while holding Young Harris to one at the 10:58 mark. Both, Jon Paul and Scott Dangel, scored their first goals of the season during the frame; Dangel also recorded his first assist, as well.

In the final period, Shorter once again added four goals. Morris netted his third of the game to start things off, while VanKauwenberg found the back of the net for the fifth time. King and VandenBrink also scored for the Hawks. Young Harris recorded consecutive goals during the period for the, 15-5, final score.

JR Willers played the complete game for the Hawks; making 11 saves on 16 shots faced.

Shorter outshot the Mountain Lions 45-20, while also holding the advantage in ground balls 30-23. The Hawks went 4-7 in extra man opportunities, and converted each of their 11 clear opportunities.

Joshua Skinner led Shorter with 9 ground balls, and won 15-19 face-offs. In total, the Hawks went 16-23 on the draw.

Shorter will close out the season next Saturday, April 19 as Ohio Valley visits Ben Brady Field for a 12:00 p.m. start. Prior to the game the Hawks will honor it's seniors for their service to the program over the years.
