Big First Half Carries No. 4 Lock Haven Past Millersville
LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – Jessica Blickenstaff netted six goals, including five in the first half, and added an assist to lead No. 4 Lock Haven to a 15-4 victory over Millersville in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) women's lacrosse semifinals on Tuesday. Ashley Mazzie (Barto, PA/Boyertown) tallied two goals and an assist to lead the Marauders (7-11), who were outshot 38-20 on the day.
With the victory, the Bald Eagles (17-1) advance to Saturday's championship game against West Chester, who defeated Shippensburg 16-12 in the day's other semifinal.
Amber Hoch got the offense going, scoring off a Jenna Richter feed 50 seconds into the game. Blickenstaff went back-to-back to stretch the Lock Haven lead to 3-0 with 22:44 remaining in the opening half and force a Millersville timeout.
With 18:39 showing, Anna Marmer (Pottstown, PA/Pottsgrove) found a cutting Mazzie to pull the Marauders within 3-1. After a long outlet pass, Kim Penuel sparked a 6-0 Bald Eagle flurry, scoring off a short pass from Lindsay Rentel.
After two more Blickenstaff goals, Caitlyn Watts made it a 7-1 lead, finishing a long solo run with 10:26 remaining in the first half. Blickenstaff and Watts each struck one more time in the half to give Lock Haven a 9-1 lead before Mazzie had a hand in the next two goals to draw Millersville within 9-3 at halftime.
Jackie Geiger (Lansdale, PA/North Penn) wrapped around and took a Mazzie pass to snap a 12-minute scoring drought before Mazzie rebounded her own saved free-position attempt to cut the deficit to six with 2:58 showing. Rentel bookended a meandering 4-0 run to open the second half, scoring 4 minutes, 49 seconds into the stanza before getting her second marker of the day 11 minutes, 31 seconds later to give her squad a 13-3 lead.
Liz Richmond (Jenkintown, PA/Jenkintown) momentarily halted the streak with an unassisted tally four minutes later. Rentel completed her hat trick with a free-position goal at the 12:12 mark before setting the final margin with her fourth unassisted tally of the day in the final four and a half minutes.
