UMass Dartmouth Downs Southern Maine

NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. -- The Massachusetts Dartmouth Corsairs opened a 9-0 halftime lead en route to a 13-3 victory over the Southern Maine Huskies in a Little East Conference game Saturday at Cressy Field.

The win was the fourth straight for the Corsairs who improve to 9-3 overall and 2-1 in conference play. The Huskies dropped their third straight match to slip to 2-9 overall and 0-3 in the conference.

The Corsairs used an aggressive defense to stymie the Huskies in the opening half. The Corsairs held the Huskies to just 10 shots and five successful clears in 14 attempts. For the game, the Corsairs forced 32 turnovers.

Sophomore Bo Prozinski (Ashland, Mass.) led the Corsairs with five goals. Junior Riley Baxter (Groton, Mass.) added three goals and had two assists. Senior Jordan McPherson (Westwood, Mass.) had one goal and three assists. Senior Nick Thayer (Chelmsford, Mass.) and rookie Matt LaFond (Bridgewater, Mass.) split the goaltending chores for the Corsairs and combined for five saves.

For the Huskies, rookie Tyler Jamison (West Gardiner, Maine/Gardiner Area) had two goals. Classmate Seth Wing (West Gardiner, Maine/Gardiner Area) had the other goal. Sophomore goalie Ryan Jurgelevich (Portland, Maine) stopped 16 shots.

Baxter and Prozinski each scored twice in the opening quarter as the Corsairs opened a 5-0 lead. Four different players, including Prozinski, scored in the second quarter for the Corsairs as the lead grew to 9-0.

Southern Maine got on the board as Wing and Jamison scored in the opening three minutes. Those would be the only goals of the quarter. UMD outscored USM 4-1 in the final quarter to account for the 13-3 final.

Southern Maine will host Plymouth State University for a Little East Conference game on Wednesday (4:00 p.m.). The game is being moved to Southern Maine as the Panthers home field is not ready for play. UMass Dartmouth travels to Eastern Connecticut State University for an LEC game Wednesday night (7:00 p.m.).
