Alvernia Rally Falls Short vs. Centenary

Reading, Pa. (Apr. 14, 2014) - Centenary (4-7) defeated Alvernia (2-11) by an 11-7 final Monday evening in non-conference men's lacrosse action at Alvernia.

The Cyclones jumped out to a 3-0 lead with three goals in the first quarter. Alvernia got on the board midway through the second quarter when senior Colin Gallagher (Sinking Spring, Pa./Wilson) scored his 22nd goal of the season and the 100th point of his career.

Centenary took a 7-2 lead at halftime. Alvernia came back with four goals in the third--three of them from Rick Reid (Drexel Hill, Pa./Monsignor Bonner), but Centenary tallied three to keep a working margin and both teams scored once in the fourth quarter.

Mikhail Gardner (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown) made 16 saves for the Crusaders.

Alvernia returns to conference action on Thursday when it hosts Elizabethtown.

READING, Pa. - Centenary built a six-goal lead and held on to defeat Alvernia 11-7 in non-conference men's lacrosse action Monday night.

Sophomore Conor Martin (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood) got the Cyclones on the board at the 7:07 mark and senior Steve Orsini (Sewell, N.J./Washington Twp.) doubled the lead just seconds later. Centenary led 3-0 after the first quarter when sophomore Anthony Biango (Highland Lakes, N.J./Vernon Twp.) found the back of the net with four minutes to play.

The Crusaders netted their first goal midway through the second period, but sophomore Kenton Gottshall (Toms River, N.J./Toms Rivers) answered for the Cyclones just over one minute later to push the lead back to three. Orsini added on two more goals as Centenary built a 7-2 edge at the break.

Gottshall's second tally of the game made the score 8-2, but Alvernia battled back with four consecutive goals to cut the lead to two.

Martin halted the Crusaders' momentum with a goal at the 2:01 mark and sophomore Luke Tremont (Vernon, N.J./Vernon Twp.) added a man-up insurance tally 30 seconds later.

Centenary limited Alvernia to one goal during the fourth quarter as sophomore goalkeeper Kevin Switzer (Hillsdale, N.J./Pascack Valley) made seven key saves during the final 15 minutes.

Switzer stopped 14 of the 21 shots he faced overall and grabbed three ground balls. He entered the game ranked 21st nationally in save percentage (.671).

Gottshall scooped up seven ground balls, while junior Nick Perkalis (Califon, N.J./Voorhees) collected nine ground balls and five caused turnovers.

Centenary outshot the Crusaders 49-32, including 21 shots by Orsini.

Rick Reid netted four of Alvernia's goals, while net minder Mikhail Gardner blocked 16 shots.

Centenary hosts Marywood on Thursday in its final home game of the season. The team will honor Orsini prior to the game as part of Senior Night.
