No. 6 Boston College Opens on 7-0 Run, Holds off Vermont

NEWTON, Mass. - Jessica Roach and Vanessa VanderZalm combined for nine points, but Vermont fell to No. 6 Boston College by a score of 16-11 in Wednesday's non-conference tilt at Newton Field.

Roach led the Catamounts with five points on three goals and two assists, and VanderZalm registered a team-high four goals to pace Vermont. Covie Stanwick of Boston College led all scorers with eight points (2 g, 6 ast), while Michaela Rix and Sarah Mannelly chipped in with four goals each.

Mackenzie Maher and Meg Hopkins combined to make four saves in net for Vermont. Emily Mata made one save and earned the win for the Eagles.

Boston College (12-4) opened the contest with seven consecutive goals in just over 15 minutes of play. Rix and Brooke Blue each picked up a pair of scores during the early spurt for the Eagles.

Vermont (10-5) answered with its first score of the game at the 12:49 mark of the opening period from Roach. Junior defender Taylor Pedersen was credited with an assist on the play, which was the first of her career.

Boston College added a pair of scores before Roach netted her second goal of the game with 6:42 remaining in the half. Stanwick responded with a tally for BC to extend the Eagles' advantage to 10-2 heading into halftime.

After a goal from BC to open the second period, Vermont rattled off four straight scores in just under three minutes to cut its deficit to 11-6 with 24:52 showing on the clock. VanderZalm picked up two of the goals during the early second half run for the Catamounts.

UVM notched two of the next three goals to pull within four scores, but Boston College answered back, as Sarah Mannelly scored two times during the Eagles' run that put them up 16-9 with 5:39 remaining in the contest.

Roach and Lucy Mower responded for Vermont with a goal apiece in the following four-plus minutes of action. Roach collected the assist on Mower's goal for her team-high fifth point of the game, as the Catamounts cut their deficit to 16-11. Boston College was able to hold off Vermont in the final minute of action to earn its 12th victory of the season.

The Catamounts host Binghamton this Saturday (April 19) in an America East tilt at 12:00 p.m.
